Open #1 is an easy driving hole. Why are these guys not hitting more club. It seems way to many are hitting 6 irons or longer to a green fronted by a creek. I always thought the goal there was to get to 100 yards from pin.

Tiger, I think they lay up short of the burn that's closer on both sides.

Tom Watson had the same comment.

He didn't understand why more golfers weren't attempting to get closer to the green with their drive.

This is what I was talking about.......note how the burn comes in closer right and somewhat left.  I think they are trying to drive to 125 yards to get a wedge they can spin without fear of either (a) driving into the burn, or (b) spinning a shot back into the burn.

Bill that is exactly what I mean. The 100 yard mark is where the fairways closes in to a mere 50 yards wide or so. lol I still think it is easier to control spin and distance in a 3 plus club wind from 100 than to face same winds or crossing than at 160 to 180 plus

I think they may have been trying for that perfect 120 and left it farther out.

One thing we have to remember is that 140 yds is 9 or PW for those guys, 7 or 8 for mortals.
