Was Melvyn in the Press Pool
« on: July 13, 2010, 10:36:33 PM »
Hmmm...

At least one question asked of Tiger seems to be quite familiar to GCA-ers.   Could Melvyn have obtained press credentials, gained entrance to the bowels of the R&A pressroom, and raised a hand to put Mr. Woods on the proverbial spot?

Nah...

Or, could it be?   One could only hope!  ;D

WOW, Seems that the message is getting out into the world at large. The real pity is that it had to be mentioned in the first place.
Whatever Tiger achieves now will always be overshadowed by his foreplay off course, perhaps tarnished is more appropriate. The sordid details have done golf no favours and for that reason I do hope Tiger does not have his name again on The Claret Jug.

As I said what a pity. :'(

I wonder, do all the other names on the jug have bona fides as to their marital fidelities?  Had none of the previous winners ever been rumored to 'foreplay', or had events glossed over factually and were well known philanderers in hushed tones within the walls of the R&A parlour?  Maybe they didn't have all the tabloid multi media back in the day.  But, I'm hard pressed to believe there aren't names on the jug who didn't have their flings - but just weren't publicly exposed, like Tiger.

I hope the champion golfer of the Open of 2010 gets his name on the jug, and wins it fair and square and with sportsmanship and dignity as the tournament procedes.  I trust that no matter who it is, he won't commit acts of moral turpitude, or gross personal hygiene faux pauxs while playing on the hallowed grounds of the 'home of golf'.

Did Old Tom ever take a whiz in a bunker???  I mean cum'mun mahn, aihteen feckin 'oles ou'in'na winds an'na fieu wee drams o'whiskey an'na gullun o'ginger beir, an'na can'na hul'dit in en'na longer laddie.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Having another women may or may not be acceptable but one in nearly every town and country you visit - seems to say something about the individual. Let’s not forget that while all this sordid multi partner’s sex was going on he was selling himself to the world as Mr Perfect. Also his game was suffering and his course behaviour getting dangerous and IMHO unacceptable.

I also hope The Champion wins like a Champion.

So having one girlfriend is OK in a marriage, but numerous is wrong. I will see if I can sell that one at home... ;)

Mike, I must be late to the party, but, the link you provided doesn't have anything about a Press conference. Maybe they took the story down, because, even when I clicked on the link that was titled referencing the presser, the story was about the age of the Open Champions.

Could you share, or relate, the Q & A in question?

Curious that the discussion turned to his infidelities, as the question was about his poor on-course behaviour. I do think that most of the champions have probably exhibited more decorous behaviour than the behaviour described by the questioner.

The moronic, prying and inappropriate questioning of the foreign golf press has me cheering harder for Tiger than ever.  Why don't they ask Monty about his side-action over the years?  Have they ever asked Faldo who he's been involved with while still married?  Do they ever inquire of other golfers why they're spending time with their kids instead of practicing links golf?  What a bunch of hypocrites!  I have no problem with them asking about on-course behavior, but his private life is none of their business, even if the tabloids had great fun with the story.

Terry,

I agree that off-course behavior should be for a different forum.

However, I thought the on-course behavior questions were spot-on.

Melvyn:

Please -- nuff of the high-minded moralism on what spotsmen can or cannot do -- according to you.

Ask many of the players who just finished the World Cup and they have flames in quite a few towns across the continent when competing in the Premier League and elsewhere. Baseball players here in the States are notorious for such situations.

Tiger's profile / image -- more so than the actual deed is what strikes at many people. I watch him for what he procudes on the course and I'd like to see him return to full form and see what he can deliver now -- the rest of the sideline gossip and BS belongs there.

One last thing - I want Tiger to have as MUCH fire on the course as within the etiquette of the game provides.

I have zero interest in Tiger's off-course shenanigans.  But I do care about his on-course shenanigans.  Bob Jones and Jack Nicklaus, two out of the three greatest tournament golfers of all-time, knew that the traditions of this game honor sportsmanship, courtesy and good manners.  Tiger should care that his on-course reputation is as bad as his off-course one.

umm, Bob Jones was more volatile than Tiger early in his career...See, St Andrews, hole 11 walk off.

Let's not forget that Tiger Woods is responsible for his current standing both in the eyes of big Corporations and the Press/TV lobby. I think he F#*k once too often and it has come back ripping in to him more than he ever imagined.  Remember Terry the old saying 'The bigger they are the harder they fall'.

I wish Tiger no harm but I will not be watching him as I once did, he has both off and on the course gone that bit too far for my liking. However,  Terry being a man of compassion you may feel that he deserves more sympathy (and nothing to do with being a fellow American, right).

I expect what made it worst was his super clean cut image vs. his reported antics off course, which if some of it is true leave me feeling a little uneasy. But as Sean says’ Live and let live’ just like Obama is doing with BP yet I hear no such words as hypocrites or moronic after the Union Carbide mess in India a few years ago, Christ, are we all being a little anti English.

Matt

I suppose I am seen as high minded being that Tiger nearly disappeared deep into the gutter , but then I will have to live with it, Think Tiger should also have to live with his actions too. Oh yes its not according to me but by course etiquette. My point all along.

Melvyn:

With all due respect partner -- wake up and smell the coffee.

Sportmen have been f*cking young and approachable women for eons. You can go back to the gladiator games if you wish.

I'm not here to talk about his foibles off the course -- that's between him and his wife.

No doubt the "image" that Tiger tried to portray is flawed and likely has cost him considerable $$ in the marketplace.

But I watch him -- and just about any other sportsmen -- for what they do in the athletic arena.

I'd like to see his golf game come back to form and enjoy the golf that comes with it. The rest is immaterial and irrelevant to me.

Melvyn,

how do you feel about Arnold Palmer, for curiousity' sakes? Or is it different because the press protected him?

But Tiger was my hero, I had his poster on my wall, I wore a red shirt every Sunday, even to church.  I bought a Buick and a Tag Heuer because of Tiger.  I drank Gatorade because of Tiger.  I copied his swing and his fist pump.  I paid up to try and get into his Pro-Am group.  I  bought his rookie card, as well as an autographed Old Course Scorecard.  I filled out 100 different entries in the Amex challenge to play with Tiger.  I collect miniature stuffed Tigers.  On days other than Sunday I wear a TW hat.  I had my golf clubs customized to match his set.  I paid up on ebay for a replica Cameron putter.  I even legally changed my name to Tigerman. He has destroyed my image of him and let me down to the very fiber of my being.  Boo- Hoo...... :'( :'( :-\ :-[ :P ::) :o 8)

Sorry Matt, you are right - must not forget his sporting activities, those which you seem to enjoy i.e. swearing, spitting and throwing clubs near spectators caring not if someone is hurt. What’s a little sex when you can really hurt someone with a golf club. You did use the word gladiator, do some feel that they need to see blood on a golf course too.

Melvyn

Sean it applies to all golfers who cannot control themselves, period. The whole game needs to face up to falling standards, its not just Tiger - I have said this time after time its about GOLF.
