Congrats to GCAer and Epic golfer David Mihm for a double eagle on #8 at Ballyneal. Hopefully David, Rob Rigg or Matt Schulte can chime in an let us know how it went down.

Glorious day at Ballyneal today for The Yucca. Course is playing the best I've ever seen it.

I have not heard any of the details, but am willing to bet that the hole was not where it is in the picture for Mr. Mihm's two.

I don't know Tom. If the pin in the picture is in the back bowl, it has a good chance to roll back into the hole at the right speed. The hardest pin might be the small flat area in the middle on the right side which is tough to hold with a putter let alone a long second shot.

If I was telling the story the pin would have been on top of one of the knobs...you know...like that bass I got that was three feet long and 30 pounds.

First off, the shot was made all the more special because it was part of an entire round in which David played absolutely beautifully.

David's tee shot on #8 ended up in the right third of the fairway.  Naturally his view of the green was obstructed by the cross bunker.  The pin was located on the front left portion of the green.  David hit a towering five wood that landed just short of the left edge of the green and rolled in.

we had Levi, David's caddie from the double eagle round, the following morning.  My partner (who carried me all the way, notwithstanding our DFL status) demanded the facts from Levi so he could attempt to replicate the attempt.

He fires his three wood to nearly the exact spot that Mihm had, and sets up for the attempt (this is after quoting all day, "you know, double eagle is in play here...").

I had the perfect vantage point for the attempted re-creation of Mihm's Miracle, as I was way down the left side of the fairway, having skinked a hybrid up the left side into a nice Yucca lie. What happens next is totally predictable: 1) the sound of metal thinly clinking off of a golf ball, and 2) the sight of a nearly vertical, bounding of an unmistakably cold-topped 3 wood from behind the center blow-out.

What a letdown. But congratulations to David, who is undoubtedly a terrific golfer, but more importantly, a terrific guy.

For those of you who've not seen Ballyneal yet, you are in for a serious treat. Forget rankings - it is hard to imagine a more fun golf course than Ballyneal.

Sincerely,
DeezNutz

I will be there tomorrow. It will be hot so hopefully the course will be very F&F. Sounds like the conditions are great right now.

+1 to what Matt said as David carried our team the entire round.

A blind 5 wood with about a 5 yard fade over a cross bunker sounds pretty sick to me - it was epic.

Ballyneal was incredible - certainly the top modern course that I have played and easily in my Top 3 ever.

I wouldn't be surprised if it goes down as THE Doak masterpiece - even if a perfect shot can lead to double eagle on one of the coolest holes on the course.

Big thanks to Jim Colton for hosting all of us - it was great to meet everyone at the Yucca and play a ton of fun golf.

Well we know now that the pin wasn't there but I will second your comment. I saw Matt hit it to a foot or two from this pin in two shots last year and Jim wasn't all tha far away either.  For those that are long enough that rear pin location seems to be accessible.

Thanks for all of the comments and kind words, guys.  Just got back to Portland and realized that I'm stuck on some rather pedestrian parkland courses for the next couple of months :/.  Whatever the equivalent of culture shock is for golf architecture, I've got it.

Ballyneal is truly spectacular.  I'm still letting things percolate for a couple weeks but without a doubt it's in the top handful of courses I've ever played.  So much variety, strategy, unique holes...and yet, it feels like one of the least-designed modern courses I've ever played--from my own perspective, maybe the best compliment I could pay Mr. Doak.  Not only that, but the staff and the ambiance is top-notch.  Totally unpretentious and first-class all the way.  My favorite golf trip ever, and maybe my favorite trip ever.  Thanks so much to Jim for setting it up.

@Matt, Rob and I thoroughly enjoyed that round with you and Chris.  It was the most intense match I've been involved in since my Little III days at Williams.

@Mike, Really enjoyed meeting you also.  I tried a few shots out of the Yucca Friday afternoon with identical results! Glad you were able to get Levi on your bag that afternoon--terrific caddie, for those of you who have the chance to play BN...doesn't overdo anything but knows exactly where to stand, when to speak up, and when to stay out of the way.

Thanks Jiim for hosting , the incredible Ballyneal staff and caddies (shout out to Dave and Gary), the other 31 Yucca participants and Tom Doak for providing the most fun 3 days of golf I have ever had.

Course was superlatively fast and firm; brown and going purple in spots by late Saturday into Sunday.   Relatively easy pins Saturday followed by the F  (add your adjective here)  pins on Sunday.  I'll go with eFFing Fun.

Great links golf, only warm.  Yes links golf.  Real links golf.

Great to meet everyone.  Best part of GCA is the friends I have made.

Special thanks to Richard and Victor for the 19 hole battle on Sunday.

More later after I recover from 12 hours in the car and the golf bends.

Bump to get this thread back up.  Carl Nichols had asked how it all went, and I know there were many cameras on scene.  Hopefully we will get to see some of the pictures that were taken, along with the participants.  I was there over the weekend but didn't get the chance to meet everyone.

It was a phenomenal event...I too hope to see some photos!  I think the staff @ BN took at least a couple of the caddies prior to Saturday a.m.'s play...

I think Spaulding may have something up his sleeve regarding photos taken. Let him marinate a bit more.

As for the event itself, the following is a brief list of things that pop into the mind of one with hermaphroditic shortcomings:
-Bitters
-Chambers Bay
-Beards
-Carnoustie Caddies
-Blue Moon
-Kangaroo Scrotum
-Yucca Buckles
-Deez Nutz
-Goatee Sunblock
-Boozepurse
-4 Prime Rib
-Rock Band
-Doak 5
-The Crispy
-Jason Day
-California King
-Kingston Heath
-Chafing spackle
-Albatross

and finally...

"If you don't know who the asshole in the group is, it's probably you."

Thanks for another epic golf trip Jim. They somehow keep getting better.

To quote a Ballyneal employee who will remain nameless - "Are those Yucca buckles for the winners or the losers"?

Thanks to our Aussie friends for the Kangaroo Scrotums - an elegant touch!

Wyatt, does "California King" have any special meaning to you personally?

Did you guys ever figure out who the girl was singing Eye of the Tiger in the RockBand Lounge? My room was right below the lounge, and she had a terrific voice.

Seriously? Blue Moon? Do you have the bartender put a little orange slice in there as well?? :) :) :)

There is so much good beer brewed in that part of the country...why waste your tastebuds on that junk!

Played 36 at BN just after the Yucca with Jim. I second everything David Mihm said about. Jim was a fantastic host and I hope to go back next year and improve on my 71 the first time around.  ;D
