A Green TOC for the Open ?
« on: July 07, 2010, 08:23:33 AM »
There really is no excuse this year.

The weather on the East Coast of Scotland this past month has been warm (!) , and pretty dry .

Yet from all reports TOC is a lovely shade of green.

Shame !

http://sport.scotsman.com/sport/Martin-Laird-excited-by-prospect.6404495.jp

MARTIN Laird, one of the six Scots in the field for next week's Open Championship, has revealed he was surprised to see St Andrews looking so green during a practice round at the weekend after playing at nearby Lundin Links beforehand and encountering the bounciest course he'd ever come across.

The US-based player, who is also in this week's Loch Lomond line-up for the £3 million Barclays Scottish Open, arrived home last Tuesday and wasted no time acquainting himself again with links golf, starting with a bounce game close to the family home in Upper Largo with his dad, Charles, and two of his friends.

"It was fun to get (back] on a links course," said Laird, who secured his second Open appearance - he missed the cut at Turnberry 12 months ago - through an International Final Qualifier at Gleneagles Country Club in Texas, where he shot a second-round 63 to claim one of the spots.

"Lundin Links was playing firm and fast - in fact, it was probably the bumpiest course I've ever seen. My chipping was shocking because I couldn't believe how short you had to land it."

Based on that experience, the 27-year-old was expecting something similar when he headed up to St Andrews on Saturday for a practice round but, due to it having been watered a lot in recent weeks, discovered the Old Course was nowhere near as bouncy. "I went there wondering if it would be the same," he added.

"It was still bouncy and firm, but it wasn't nearly as fiery as Lundin Links was. However, if it doesn't rain too much I'm sure they will have it nice and firm by the time next Thursday comes around for The Open."

If TOC is anything but rock hard and lightning fast after this summer the R&A deserve shooting.  A chance to produce a course as fast as Hoylake in 2006 would have been bottled, hopefully not because a few people who should know better don't like brown golf courses.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Brian:

I don't think the color is due to the Open being there this year.  I think it's because of the tourists, in two respects:

1.  Americans paying top dollar like it somewhat green, and

2.  The course does so many rounds that they HAVE to keep it growing a bit.  You can let a course like Hoylake go toasty, because it's a private course with minimal outside play.  But if St. Andrews were that brown and they were running 200 visitors a day through it, there'd be no grass left after a month or two.

Does anyone know when the Links Trust stops play on TOC when it hosts the Open? It's at least two weeks, no?

The course closes exactly a month before the Sunday of the Open, according to the Links Trust web site.

According to Gordon McKies blog, the last days play was the 18th of June :

Having just returned from an extended tour of the country, I can validate that TOC is definitely the greenest course we saw in Scotland.  If I get a chance in the next couple of days leading up to the tournament I will try to post some pictures as examples.  Having been to Augusta and Bethpage for the US Open I was shocked how similar the conditioning was... they really were close.  The whole 1/18 area was like a carpet.  Sprinklers were running on TOC during our rounds on the New and Jubilee.  The New could not have been any more different, greens were getting very thin and balls were running like crazy.  Which of course was a lot of fun.

Carnoustie was more what I would have expected TOC to look like, solid conditioning but not quite as made for HDTV.  My caddy there told me they deliberately thinned out the rough a few weeks back as the Seniors are going to play it over 7000 yards and wanted to prevent a complete embarrassment of the players.  And the rough was still healthy...

North Berwick was truly Scottish conditioning at its best - like concrete.

The weather over there has actually been very hospitable for golf this year - cold and wet for grass growing early in the year and then turned unseasonably warm and dry just about 3-4 weeks ago.  So we saw lots of thick rough (especially in Aberdeen and Dornoch) and firm and fast, yet still relatively green and consistent.

The bright side in all of this were if the pattern holds, winds were averaging about 20+ with the back nine playing into the prevailing wind.  The 17th at 495 is going to be an absolute terror if that holds, it is a pronounced dogleg from the new back tee.

Brian, thanks for the report.  The image of sprinklers running on the Old Course is etched in my brain.   :o :-X

Is there any chance the longer hitters will drive straight over the hotel on #17 and straighten out that "pronounced dogleg?"

Damn,
I was in Dundee this morning (been for a job interview - fingers crossed, everyone) and almost turned left on the way home for a quick trip to St A.
I'll try and pop over there sometime this or next week and take a few preview snaps.

FBD.

PS Looks like much rain is forecast for Loch Lomond this weekend, so it's going to be even less of a pre-Open preparation than it might have been 8).

Rumoured on the net, that ESPN 3, formerly ESPN360.com, will air live BBC coverage of the Open Championship for all four days!

That should keep you happy  ;)

Please guys, I think they will have it brown firm and fast by next Thursday. This is not their first Open. One of the Supers please go through the prep schedule for us.

The problem is Tiger, if we get intermittent rain between now and next Thursday, they might not have a chance to dry out thats why its pot luck at an Open.

So true.   Remember Hoylake in 2006?  I played there 3 months later and the "dead" brown turf was green but still firm.

Brian E. -

You are correct. According to an article in the current (July 12) issue of GolfWorld magazine, ESPN in the U.S. is carrying all 4 days of the Open. The first 2 days, coverage begins at 5:00am (EDT). Saturday's coverage starts at 7:00am and Sunday runs from 6:00am to 1:30pm. Rocco Mediate will be part of the ESPN announcing team.

This past winter and spring were very cold and the growth didn't start until late May in the south east. Since then we've been hot and very dry, if it's anything like that up in Fife I guess they are watering to get some growth into the grass.

I believe Tom is right about the wear on the course requiring a degree of growth to keep things healthy, 1200 players a week can put a massive amount of divots onto a course.

If it rains this weekend they maybe unlucky and be a touch slow but without grass growth the players would be moaning about dry uneven surfaces which is very different to good but dry brown surfaces.

Same story in Ireland Mark...

As you say, they could be unlucky with rain though... Let's hope it's dry and then they can manage it with a few days to go...

1200 players a week taking an average of 1.5 divots on the non par 3s on TOC would make 115 000 divots a month! You can fill them in but without water they will not recover.

This image is a little worrying with the way the fairways are being cut and then a 2nd cut just outside the fairway followed by the rough.  Looks a little more like a normal parkland course rather than the normal lack of definition we have seen in the past.

Would the R&A be watering to increase the length of the course to try protect the score? Would the R&A do something like that?

Over the hotel may be the safest shot for the modern tour player, if they use the new tee.   Weather will be the only defence forthe OC next week.
