Visiting Augusta in September
« on: July 06, 2010, 03:46:57 PM »
This September we're stopping off for day in Augusta whilst heading towards the coast and I was wondering the likelihood of visiting ANGC.

Clearly would not expect to play but with a letter of introduction from myself and own club here in the UK would a visit be possible at all? Any thoughts or suggestions would be most welcome  :)

Thanks.

P.S. Any ANGC members here would be most welcome to reply and offer to host me! With a return invite of course!!

I believe the course is still closed in September. And I believe that visits like yours are not something that they would normally do, even if it were.

I would invest in a good set of bolt cutters and have your pro write you a letter to get you on Augusta Country Club instead :) ;) ;) :)

Seriously - Hire a Cessna 172 and view ANGC from the air.

As someone not familiar with the ways of ANGC, Gareth has asked a reasonable question and deserves better answers.

ANGC closes for the summer and does not reopen until late October. It does not permit play unless you are invited by and play with a member. Without an invitation you will likely not be allowed on the grounds. If you are British, you might not be accustomed to the barriers to entry to many ultra private clubs in the US like ANGC. There are few, if any, in the UK with barriers quite so high.

There are, however, a number of wonderful courses you can play in the Augusta area if you are interested. A list can be provided on request.

Enjoy your visit to the States. There is plenty to see and do even without a day at ANGC. :)

No it's not, why?

Realise it was a long shot but worth asking the question all the same. I know a couple of people who have played Augusta so perhaps I will canvas their views/speak to their contacts who are members.

This is almost as funny as when a guy showed to play with his practice round ticket....

Gareth- Actually being British will help you though it is very remote that you will get on. If you want to see Augusta, Masters week is the best route, to get inside the gates at other times you need to be invited by a member.

Bob

Thanks for that rather more measured and helpful reply...

We do in fact have some ultra exclusive/hard to access clubs over here in the UK and Europe too - although I would, on personal experience, wager that they are not quite as "closed" as ANGC is.

For example there is Queenwood which is modeled on Augusta in many ways and I have been fortunate to play there twice now.

The holiday in question is not a golf holiday per se but as we will be passing through Augusta (en route to Charleston/Savannah) thought it might be worth seeing if a little pilgramage would be at all possible.

If I can get one or two rounds in would Hilton Head be worth a shot at that time of year - and where else to have on a very short list??

Thanks,
Gareth

Gareth,

Send a letter and ask for permission to see the course. Explain that you are coming all the way from the other side of the pond and include a sentence or two as to how most of the clubs over there allow access even of play, something of which you are not seeking.

Respectfully done with an accompanying letter of introduction on your club's letterhead and who knows? Stranger things have happened...

Thanks Philip.

That was the approach I considered and fully accept it was a long shot. I will certainly visit there during the Masters at some point but until then it would be interesting at least to see if I would get a reply to the request to visit only.

After you do that, have your club arrange a round at Palmetto as the very likely fallback position.

I'd write the letter.  What do you have to lose?

Who dares wins!!

I've heard it said that when growing a business, whoever gets told "no" the most will be the most successful.  Most people don't have the courage to ask for the business, so they don't hear "no" nearly as often as the guy who asks and eventually gets a "yes".  Perhaps the same works when trying to play a great course?

Good luck.  And by the way, if this works out for you don't post about it.

Absolutely write a letter!  Why not?!  Plus, it'll only take a few minutes.

The repeat an earlier recommendation, do your best to play Augusta Country Club.  GREAT, great course.  PLUS! you can still see Augusta National from there... see?

See?  Look really, really close!

Where will you be staying on the coast?  Maybe you will not be able to visit ANGC, but there are a number of excellent courses that you can actually PLAY along the coast of Georgia and South Carolina.
