Progress of LACC North restoration
« on: June 27, 2010, 03:54:10 PM »
The restoration is running a couple of weeks ahead of schedule. The course should reopen as planned 11/1. Looks sensational, especially the area around the new #2 and #8 greens and #3 tee, which I looked over for some time. Stay tuned !

JK, couple of questions:

Where is the new #3 tee relative to the existing one. I "think" they pulled it nearly straight back but not certain.

Is the clearing of the creek on #8 complete.

Can you confirm that they are leaving the existing #2 green in place for those that prefer.

Is the plan to keep both greens open on 2?

Hanse pulled  #2 tee straight back, narrowing the back portion so as not to interfere with the new #2 green. The old #2 green and fairway approach are still there. How long they'll be part of the course who knows ?.....a practice area maybe someday ? The pines along the left approach to #8 have been cleared out and the original waste area recreated. The baranca in front of the new #2 green is deeper than I'd imagined. There's a new back tee for #17 just to the left of #16 green. What a tee shot ! The Billy Bell fairway & greenside bunkering are major league gnarly. Capt. Thomas and Billy Bell are smiling down from the golfing pantheon for sure. Even moving the tee on #1 back and to the right (by the fountain) completely changes that hole, when combined with the fairway bunker restoration ! IMO Hanse's restoration will be hailed in the golfing world as a monumental achievement, and LACC North will move into the second ten in the ratings.

JK,
Thanks for the update.  Exciting stuff.  I can imagine how great the sight lines will be on holes like 8, 12 and 16.  Can you confirm that the Club is planning to restore the old Fowler par 3 17th green as a 19th hole?

Is it the team of Gil Hanse and Geoff Shackelford who are designing the changes?  He doesn't say about this project on his blog.

This is hard to say for a 30plus year Riviera vet, but there is a new sheriff in town! I had a fortunate invitation to look around recently and I was absolutely blown away. Every single hole has some new dynamic that has enhanced, recovered or retrofit that hole to make it far superior to what was there for the last 40 years. Bravo to all of those involved, especially the membership who had the guts and foresight to pick Hanse, Shackelford, et al and embrace what they had in mind. LA North will now definitely be worthy of the high praise it has received through the years.

Ron Rhoads, RIP, was the DoG at Riviera for many he years and a lifetime member at LACC. He always mentioned how amazing the 2nd, 6th and 8th holes were in the original forms. He was so right. I felt like I was in a time warp getting to see those holes put back into a version of their former selves.

The 2 biggest things that I was blown away by were the newly cut-back scale of the place, and the genius of the routing with the return of 2 & 8.
With a good chunk of trees removed in just the right places, this property feels like it goes on forever. Also, the views from one hole to another feel enormous, and the 6th hole now seems like it is set in a cathedral. In terms of Routing, the meeting of holes 2, 3, 8, 16 & 17 is just brilliant flow wise and really fun in allowing groups to interact with a bunch of different friends on a Saturday morning.

Also, there might not be a better par 4 in SoCal now than the 17th at LA North.

Having played golf with Michael at Riviera (what a great experience considering how intimately he knows the course) this is truly high priase. Now I'm bummed that I will be coming to LA with a standing invitation to the play the course but it won't be opened. Maybe I won't push too much to go to LA now.

Hanse removed the 2 left greenside bunkers from yhe 16th green (which has been reshaped and enlarged) in order to make room for the 20 yards longer new #17 back tee. You get a lump in your throat just standing on that tee and contemplating the drive !

Was there one before?

Well maybe at that place on the other side of the 405.  ;)

Thanks JK. I disagree on the potential rating, it might be even higher ;). I always felt LACC "could" be a Doak 10, based on what I saw last fall, they were on the way.

Note the contrast between the Jim Wagner bunkering and the Horribottle bunkering.
Also, note the clearing of the trees on the right and the widening of the fairway on #13.
