Domestic Travel w/ Clubs
« on: June 25, 2010, 02:29:51 PM »
I just booked a flight with United and I went through all their language on checked bags and I am a little confused.  Can you now travel with golf clubs as your only checked bag as $25 each way?

I had been avoiding all these fees by using Southwest exclusively, but I had some miles to burn up.

Any recent travelers, I would really appreciate any help on what I am going to get dinged with for my clubglove.

Thanks.

It is the normal rate but they have a weight limit.  I think it is 50 pounds but it could be 40.  I know I come close to it with my hard sided bag if I have it stuffed with balls and shoes.

With Delta it is 50 lbs and it is the same as any normal bag.  I have a soft case and it typically runs about 35lbs with clubs and shoes, I have to stuff it pretty full to get anywhere close to 50.

With USAir under 50 pounds counts as that first checked bag just fine.

Steve:

That should be correct on United. I fly them exclusively when I travel with my clubs. If you fly United very often, look into their Premier Baggage service. It's $250 for 12 months, and you and up to 8 other people traveling on the same itinerary (same confirmation #) don't pay baggage fees. It already paid for itself on my first trip out to Ballyneal this year. I'm flying out for July 4th weekend with my wife and daughter, and it will save us $290 round trip.

When I travel by myself, this is what I use.  I've probably owned 10 travel bags over the last 20 years and this is the best combo of protection, size, weight, and convenience (let alone price).  I put a Sunday carry bag in my suitcase or carry on along with shoes.

I ripped the club divider out and just stick the clubs in any place.  It's easier now that I travel with no more than 10 clubs.  I have a large hard shell cast that can hold three sets of clubs that I only use when traveling with the wife.

I have no commercial interest in this posting, just showing what I like.  Could not find a regular pic of the product.

I have seen one of those small travel bags. They look ok I guess.

Last time I traveled with my clubs I used a regular Club Glove type travel bag, packed my clubs, shoes and enough clothes for a week in there and was under 50 pounds. Its very easy to pack light for a trip, just don't let you wife pack for you.

It's amazing how I'm always under the 50 lb limit when the Skycap sees the $10 spot in my hand.  Fully packed w/ all of my clothing, the Club Gloves probably weighs in at 55-60 lbs.
