Alex...
I love the idea of your thread.
Frankly, I like what I am seeing at Pebble. I haven't played it, but it is on my "must play" list...and up to now I haven't been overly pumped to get out there soon, but this tournament is changing my mind just a bit.
Obviously, the views and the small greens have to be the calling card of golf at Pebble (not to mention the history). But I think I saw a 500 yard par 4 and a 284 yard par 4 there yesterday. Pretty nice mix. Also a 99 yard par 3 and some longer ones. Seems like it might test all aspects of someone's game.
But to your point, people are complaining about 14 and 17 a lot. Personally, I like 14...but if they want to enlarge the pinnable area of the green, I think that might give the players a little more margin of error on approach shots and/or recovery shots. That doesn't change to area of someone's game that is being tested...so fine. Change it. On 17, the green does look a little small and narrow. Ok...make it bigger...no big deal.
But in all, this course is something special. It seems like a great test for championship caliber golfers. Long hitters have their chances to make hay as do the short and straight short game masters. That seems like a nice test of golf for all types of golfers. Maybe I am smoking something wacky, but I wouldn't change too much at all.
