2018 US Open site?
« on: June 16, 2010, 05:26:48 PM »
Now that Erin Hills has been awarded the 2017 U.S. Open- let the 2018 site speculation begin.  I would assume that will be a year to return to the western U.S.  I also assume a traditional course will be chosen as well (with '15 and '17 on new courses)  Will it be Torrey Pines again?  Convential wisdom would say yes.  Here's my vote for a return to Rivera.

2019 is at Pebble so I can't see them being on the West Coast in 2018 as well..

I didn't know 2019 was going to be at Pebble.  Well, I would think it's back to New York.  Let my vote be for Shinnecock.  For me, the Bethpage novelty is over.

In the New York area.
The mnemonic for the next seven years is Compcoe  ( Congressional, Olympic, Merion, Pinehurst, Chambers, Oakmont, Erin )

So you don't think that "The Donald" will break in by then with his course in New Jersey?  How about The Country Club?  We missed the 100th anniversary of his win.  The 105th anniversary could work.

Bethpage on the 9 year cycle.

I would love to see it at Shinnecock. I think it's a fantastic golf course, very fair but challenging. I also much prefer it to Bethpage Black.

Shinny is the logical choice quite frankly.  I hope it's not Bethpage.  It would make sense for it to return to LI that year after a long hiatus.  Sebonack might make the short list...

I would love to see it at Shinnecock also.  If not, I wont be disappointed with Bethpage either.

Shinny....

Or how about Lancaster GC (keeping with Flynn).  The US Women's Open there could whet some USGA appetites.

Any interest by any Boston-area courses?

How did the USGA not award the 2013 Open to The Country Club? They dont even bother to honor one of the greatest American victories of all time, in any sport? That seems incredibly ignorant of them.

Maybe they already knew what the answer would be.

The Country Club said no, not the USGA....

Sebonack would be great. I'd love to see that course on TV..

If they can hold it at Shinny, then why not NGLA? Too easy?

I'd love to hear the reasoning behind the folks who think it should be at Sebonack suggesting why that would be appropriate.

It's going to happen sometime (hopefully in my lifetime), so let's just award it right now to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort and Old MacDonald.

This golf course could host an Open Championship (British) tomorrow so why not a US Open?

Need more length? There's plenty of places to stretch tees to 7500 yards...however with the mid June winds it wouldn't be necessary.

The USGA loves West Coast Open's because of the prime time TV ratings in the East and the great ad dollars. This will more than make up for reduced galleries.

Can you imagine 4 days of 25 - 35 mph winds and the bitching that would ensue? Narrow the fairways like the folk's in Far Hills are wont to do and grow some gnarly fescue rough. It would make the massacre at Winged Foot in '74 look like the Teddy Bears's picnic!

I've been a walking scorer at 6 US Opens and have played Sebonack several times and thought that it could hold the Open tomorrow. The only other course in that category is Oakmont.

Ken,
I don't think the USA would go to Bandon for the Open - not enough population to attend.  Obviously the quality of the GCA isn't the issue

Ken and Dan, another major reason why I don't think the USGA will go to Bandon for the Open is because the logistical needs for volunteers on a day-to-day basis for the 8 days (including playoff Monday) simply doesn't exist locally. Figure a pool of 4-6,000+ are needed.
