The lowest score ever in a men's Major is 63.  Oddly enough, it has been done about 20 times.  I keep thinking each year that it will finally topple and we'll see a 62.

Evan Beirne who plays college golf for St. Johns and recently won the Connecticut State Golf Assn. Russ Palmer stroke play championship shot 58 in a casual round at New Haven CC. He made 13 birdies and 5 pars on some tough Willie Park Jr. greens. Though not a tournament round pretty strong regardless. The previous course record was 62.

If Jamie K who shot 25 on the back nine had shot 25 on the front nine the pressure would have been so intense on his second nine he would have been very lucky to shoot 40.

This type of scoring was what was missing from the equation for the rollback argument to have legs. Now that the scores are going lower, with the added distance of courses, for the powers that be, to stick with the belief that the ball is not a problem, or, that distance gains are not occurring, is gross negligence.

Very low scoring and 59 in a Major are two different things.  The balls that are available are the same as the balls that were available the last time the Open Championship was held there, and I'm not so sure the new breed of player (Schwarzel, Watney, Ishikawa, McIlroy) is any different than the old breed (Woods, Mickelson, Els, Goosen).

If you think there will be a 59, you must think it is a lock that someone betters 63.  Maybe this is the year.

The Golf Gods don't allow 62's in majors. Between Tiger's putt a couple of years ago, and Nick Price's at ANGC years ago, I am convinced that there is a cosmic reason there have been no 62's .
