What Course Has the Most 'All Clear' Bells
« on: May 20, 2010, 01:37:51 PM »
I played Yale on Sunday (with Mike Sweeney and Lou Duran) and noticed they've added a few more bells at the back end of the blind shots.  I personally got to ring at least 2, and it was the highlight of my day (which says something about my game).

The course with the most bells in my experience is Tobacco Road, which has a bunch.

We've got so many blind holes at Balbirnie that some days it sounds like a bloody Carillon out there.

I think I can recall at least four maybe five.

Bah,

I would have thought just getting to play with both Sweeney & Duran would be the highlight of the day!

Phil,

If you play 18 holes at Shiskine, how many bells or similar signaling devices do you use?

I seem to remember 2-3 at Tobacco Road. I believe there were at least two at Four Mile Ranch as well.
I don't know how I would ever have been able to look into the past with any degree of pleasure or enjoy the present with any degree of contentment if it had not been for the extraordinary influence the game of golf has had upon my welfare.

My home course in St. Catharines has three bells - before the bells, we had huge mirrors on 30 foot poles so you could see over the crest of the hills to see if things were clear.

I think they pulled those out about five years ago.  They were kind of cool, now that I think about it :)

The Presidio in San Francisco has a hole with a periscope and I think another with stairs you climb up to see over the ridge.

Elie has that great U-boat periscope by the first tee - inside the starter's hut!

I agree with Mayhugh, what a foursome.  Phil, Lou, and Mike....who cares where you are playing, bells or not!  Fun times.

And from what I can remember, Tobacco Road only has one bell, correct?  #7.

Tobacco Road has at least 3 bells, 7, 13 and 18 for sure.   I think 15 and 16 might as well.   They need them if they don't have them already on 15 and 16  as you can't see the fairway from the tees on either hole.  I felt like I was at a junior high school band competition playing there with all of the off key bells ringing all day.

The course I grew up on, Dewsbury & District had three of them. They left your ears ringing for a couple of holes afterwards :D

There are five blind approaches at Shiskine, but I think only one of them is governed by a bell.  There are also flags, switches, and all manner of little devices.

There are at least that many blind approaches at Machrie, but I don't recall that any of them had any sort of "all clear" device [in 1983].  Fortunately it's not usually that busy.

Calculated at a full 18 that would be 5 + 5*(18-12)/18 = 6.6666666... devices. You have to have 7 to beat it. ;)
