Aronimink “STARS and STRIPES” BBQ Gala
« on: May 19, 2010, 08:49:58 AM »
I'm very happy to be the messenger of the following:

Aronimink  “STARS and STRIPES”  BBQ Gala
July 2 & 3, 2010
12:00 Noon – 6:00 ish p.m.

All GCA members, fellow lurkers and their kin…you are hereby invited to attend another festive offering by fellow GCA lurkers the Shreiner brothers and Billy Daulton. As those who attended the stellar Walker Cup caper well know, it promises to be another first class presentation each day, including:  shenanigans, plenty of fine fare, with adult and youth beverages on offer.

The “Yankee Doodle” Cart Shuttle Service, for those that may need an assist with the very short walk to and from the course, will once again be in operation.  The venue is a lovely, covered terrace and lawn area of a home just down Golf Club Rd., the street directly across from the main entrance of Aronimink Golf Club. It gets no better and we’re a musket shot from the golf!

We encourage all who wish to attend to bring friends or family out to enjoy the day.  So kindly RSVP to the email or telephone information listed below and we’ll put you on the list!  We look forward to hosting you, as we embrace our nation’s birthday weekend and share in the classic, colonial GCA spirit, along with other golf and social banter.

Again, there will be no charge for the revelers. A themed contest will be held, with chances and donations greatly appreciated, to benefit educational assistance to our most deserving caddies of the J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust.

The directions, daily menu and further details will be posted shortly. There is also a vicious rumor circulating that Tom Paul "Jones" and Tom “Poor Richard’s Almanac” MacWood… may be staging a feather-quilled pen… duel to the death on the grounds that weekend. That alone demands a sound beating of the Tom-Tom and the attendance of all parties!

Cheers,

Steve and Kris Shreiner, Bill Daulton

Tough weekend to get away from the family.
I'd love to attend but am not sure just yet. Usually have my father in law's annual golf outing 7/2 or 7/3 at the venerable White Birch Golf Course near Jim Thorpe, PA.  I'll check and reply.

"There is also a vicious rumor circulating that Tom “PAUL” Jones and Tom “Poor Richard’s Almanac” MacWood… may be staging a feather-quilled pen… duel to the death on the grounds that weekend."

Joe Bausch:

You got the name wrong. It should be Tom Paul "Jones."

At first you won't believe this but I'm actually related to John Paul Jones. Few may realize it but his actual name was John Paul. He added his last name, Jones, some years later due to some problems he had at sea. It seems while at sea he killed a mutineer by the name of Blackton (I think the mutineer's whole name was Thomas MacWood Blackton or Thomas Blackton MacWood).

Apparently to sort of cover his tracks, or his name and reputation, he added the last name Jones (some say that name came from some friend of his brother's from North Carolina).

Again, you probably think I'm joking but just do a basic Google search on the man and you'll see the truth of it.  :o

PS:
Just to add a bit of historical complexity to what you said and the foregoing, one of the best sources of John Paul's or John Paul Jones' dilemma comes from a letter he wrote to Benjamin Franklin, ironically the author of your aforementoned "Poor Richard's Alamac."

By the way, I'll be at the BBQ but just like that forebearer of mine, John Paul or John Paul Jones, I will be wearing a sword in case I have to kill some mutineer.

Dan--no, but I am incredibly impressed you were able to even write a name like that. Is the language Mutineerese?

Tom Paul -
In June 1782, John Paul (Jones) was appointed to command the 74-gun America, but his command fell through when Congress decided to give the America to the French as replacement for the wrecked Le Magnifique. As a result, he was given assignment in Europe in 1783 to collect prize money due his former hands. At length, this too expired and Jones was left without prospects for active employment, leading him in 1788 to enter into the service of the Empress Catherine II of Russia, who placed great confidence in Jones, saying: "He will get to Constantinople." He took the name Павел Джонз (Pavel Dzhones).

Jones avowed his intention, however, to preserve the condition of an American citizen and officer. As a rear admiral aboard the 24-gun flagship Vladimir, he took part in the naval campaign in the Liman (an arm of the Black Sea, into which flow the Southern Bug and Dnieper rivers) against the Turks. Jones successfully repulsed Ottoman forces from the area, but the jealous intrigues of Russian officer Prince Grigory Alexandrovich Potemkin and his cohort Prince Charles of Nassau-Siegen caused him to be recalled to St. Petersburg for the pretended purpose of being transferred to a command in the North Sea. Here he was compelled to remain in idleness, while rival officers plotted against him and even maliciously assailed his private character through accusations of sexual misconduct. Even so, in that period he was able to author his Narrative of the Campaign of the Liman.
On June 8, 1788, Jones was awarded the Order of St. Anne, but he left the following month, an embittered man.

------------

And we're going to try to attend.   Sounds like a great event!

Dan:

Thank you for that interesting update on my sword-wheelding, mutineer-murdering progenitor. Quite the life that guy had and your chronicle just goes to show that one should never trust the French or the Russians.

I might consider changing my name on here in his honor to TEPavel.

By the way, was John Paul Jones the one who responded when asked by the opposing commanding officer to surrender; "I have not yet begun to fight."

If you answer that correctly I will tell you the true story of that Russian sexual misconduct thing and why Jones left Russia an embittered man. The true story is contained in a secret vault at Drexel University.

Tom,
Yep - John Paul (Jones) was the one that said that.  A true American hero, which fits into the theme of the TOUR event at the Mink :)

I'll be hosting clients at the event, but as soon as I know my schedule and which days I'm needed I'd love to stop over. As we all know, Golf is big business these days and the amount of stands, corporate tents and such that are already up on the property is amazing.

Better late than never… many thanks to the GCA GANG!

GCA lurkers, The Shreiner brothers and Bill Dalton, would like to extend a belated thank you to everyone who attended the two day,  BBQ outing at Aronimink, PA. during  the past Fourth of July weekend.  A tip of the cap to Mike Cirba and Joe Bausch for helping in getting the word out on the event.

Special kudos to Tom Paul, who kindly assisted in having architect Ron Prichard,  whose fine restoration work was very evident during the event, give two superb presentations to our guests after lunch each day. To have his insights and shared information, prior to viewing the golf and walking the course, was quite unique and much appreciated by all.

Stanley Zontek, veteran USGA Director for the Mid-Atlantic Greens Section, also attended on Saturday and provided some in-depth observations on course-setups,  Pebble Beach U. S. Open analysis, and also answered questions put forward by the GCA gang and other guests.

Both days contributed rich, engaging experiences on so many levels and we are grateful to everyone who joined us to make for a memorable week. Many of us remarked how golf needs to continue to promote and foster these and other opportunities, in stimulating settings, to enable each of us to laugh, learn, and share with one another.

Sincere thanks to all who contributed to supporting the J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Fund. Your generosity will help provide financial support to deserving caddies in need, as they pursue their college education.

We look forward to hosting the GCA gang again, at Aronimink, in 2011!

Cheers,
The Shreiner and Dalton Clans
