« on: May 08, 2010, 09:52:33 AM »
Nice story here by Tim Rosaforte of Golf World on the cenntenial celebration of the Travis Memorial at Garden City Golf Club.

http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-tours-news/2010-05/golf-rosaforte-amspotlight-0510

No entry fee, practice privileges the entire week leading up to the event, history, venue, quality of field, this event has it all.

Is the amateur golfer Gary Koch mentioned in this article the same Gary Koch who won six PGA tour events?

Pretty funny, before clicking on the link, I thought the implication was that Gary Koch had had his amateur status reinstated. :)

I'm aware of the Travis, the National Singles, the Crump Cup, the Coleman, the Sunnehanna and the Wilson - what other big am events are there? (excluding the US and British Am, obviously)

George Pazin,

I don't believe that any of the tournaments listed come close to matching the accomodations afforded to the contestants in the Travis.

No entry fee.
Unlimited use of the course from Sunday afternoon through Thursday afternoon prior to the Friday qualifier.

Think about that, the contestants have full use of the golf course for 4 1/2 days prior to the event.
That's virtually unheard of, as is having NO entry fee.

The field is composed of a blend of International, National, Regional and Local golfers along with a few qualifying members.

The only negative is the potential for bad weather, which in mid-May is a real posibility.

Guys,

Best of luck at this year's Travis. This year will be the first one I've missed since being invited 7 or 8 years ago. Hopefully the weather will be decent this year. Based on the past several Travis Fridays you could just about guarantee awful weather. In all the tournament golf I've played, the most miserable conditions I've played in have been at the Travis. Unfortunately on more than one occasion. I think 2 years ago was the worst. when I started my round it was about 50 degrees, the wind was blowing 20+ and it was raining pretty hard...that was the best weather of the day, with deteriorating conditions for the remaining 4 hours. What a day!  :P

Not a single player that teed off after about 10:30 qualified for the Championship flight.

Despite the weather, the tournament is absolutely fantastic. The way the club and it's members embrace the tourney and competitors really makes for a special week. Have fun everyone!
