I agree with John - The Portland, OR munis are probably the best set of city-owned courses I've ever seen.  On their own, Eastmoreland (held the USGA Publinx) and the two Heron Lakes courses should be on the list.

For example, I really like Wintonbury Hills (#11), but I think Eastmoreland, a H. Chandlar Egan design, is better golf.

Eastmoreland has held 2 Public Links.  Heron Lakes has also hosted a Public Links.

Another muni worth noting is Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, KY. It is a Pete Dye track that they aren't afraid to let get a little brown and firm (from my memory). It held the men's Pub Links in 1998 and the women's in 2007. It also hosted a Senior Tour event back in the early-mid 90's. It is a fun course on a smallish piece of property, but has a lot of variety. I can't say whether it belongs on the list or not as I've not played enough of the others to compare. However, it is very affordable and worth a look if in the area...

Nice to see Utah weigh in with 4 courses...it really is deserving here as there are so many quality courses that are very inexpensive to play.

Richard,

Make that 3 Washington State courses, don't forget Indian Canyon in Spokane,    ;D

I doubt they do a very good job of knowing and getting to all munis to play them and rate them.
Therefore, it is a spotty list at best. Take for example Utah. We all know Kalen's poor taste. Now we see it reflected in Golf Week. What's up with that Brad?  ???

Played George Wright in Boston many times, I know there are much nicer municipal golf courses on Cape Cod....

For those in the PA/NJ/DE area,my sources at Golfweek have revealed that Inniscrone came very close to the Top 50 and that Lederach, McCullough's Emerald Links and  Jeffersonville in that order were also in the Top 100.
Rock Manor came very close to the Top 100.

Lederach is a muni?  If that is the case, than those others on the list must be brilliant courses to beat out Lederach.

Yes, Lederach is a muni as it is owned by Lower Salford Township.

Inniscrone was originally developed as a private club but is now owned by London Grove Township and is the highest rated muni in PA.

I can't believe there are only 4 municipal courses in the US better than (either course at) Torrey Pines.

There are more than that number of better public courses in San Diego County alone. in my humble opinion.

Martin. Excellent point but one cannot discount the influence holding USGA and Pro events in people's minds.   Re Eastmoreland. To the student of gca the course still has the bones but recent changes and stupid plantings have detracted from it's quality.

Sure. I know people who love Torrey. I also know people who think The Belfry is a good course. Amazingly.

To apply a test sometimes used here, after I had played 9, which admittedly did take an enormous amount of time, I had forgotten some of the holes I had just played. By the time I got back to my hotel, I had forgotten most of them.
