I had the honor to walk a family friend down the aisle in West Virginia this past weekend so I thought it was time to return to my golfing roots. As a child my father would take us to a small, rugged 9-holer in the hills of WV. Most of the time was spent looking in the creek for crawdads, but there was golf to be had. The course was called White Day and it was kept by Ivan Hayhurst. Ivan's posture was of a question mark, most likely from his labors at the course, which made him look even smaller than he was. With size 4 shoes he put his heart and passion into his baby. A friendly place where still today 10year olds and younger play for free. A course with a heartbeat. Natural and minimalistic, and usually fast and firm due to the lack of watering.

White Day lies in two counties. Monongalia and Marion. Birthplace of notable sport figures NFL Hall of Famer Frank Gatski(12 seasons..11 tittle games), Nfl Hall of Famer Sam Huff, Bama coach Nick Saben, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez,Final Four coach Bobby Huggins, coaches Terry and Tommy Bowden and Gold Medalist Mary Lou Retton. Also it is the home of West Virginia University.

Anthony, when I was a teenager in the 1950s I'd go play White Day with a buddy of mine.  I shot a 39 the first time around, a low score I could never thereafter duplicate.  I'm surprised it's still there.  Got any photos of the actual course?

Hole 1 is 435 and starts with a blind drive to a plateau fairway. If the drive goes too far the player is left with a tricky downhill lie for the approach.

  Tee

Plateau fairway. Second shot may also be blind.

  Ring the bell.

   Green with creek 20yards infront.

Today I layed up with the second. Hit a liner past the green then got up and down for bogey. feels good to be home again.

Hole 2 350. Excellent greensite. Green sits on a ridge and runs off every direction but the right.

  From fairway

  Toward green

   Reminant of bunker.

Missed on the right. Two putted for bogey. Greens a little thick this time of year.

Does this make mom a "mountain mama"?
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Thanks Tony. Actually my father took up golf because the guys from the mines had a golf leage once a week at this very course. My child is the first generation that will not have worked around the mines at one time or another. I always worried when my dad was late from work.

  God Bless

Now you went and done it Anthony. At some future date, this website will be treated to Jawbone Creek Country Club!

The long 550 3rd. Could never get to the tree as a kid in two. Today flew it with the driver(or possible the ball went through it). The hole flows in and out of the natural contours of the bank. No shots are blind the the ball disapears and reappears as it bounces down the fairway reminiscent of across the pond.

   Natural

Fast and Firm around the green. The area to the left of the green used to be a creek which made the hole better.

Strong tee ball and stong 2nd left a pitch to the green. No true putts today, but my first par of the day. Almost Heaven.

You've played some of the greatest courses in the world.  Would you say that playing White Day is less fun?
