Palm Desert, CA

Best Public- Indian Wells Golf Resort Players Course (Fought)  Great course with great conditions, a good test of your game.

Best Public on Budget- Desert Dunes, you can find good deals here.  You are most likely going to play in a 30+mph wind, but that is what makes it fun.

Best Private- Stone Eagle, it will open up again ;D

Nashville -

1. Don't move here if you want to play local public golf
2. See #1
3. Don't move here if you want to play local private golf

OK - That's probably harsh.  I'll try again.

1. Pacific Dunes
2. Wild Horse
3. Kingsley Club

Doh!

No love for Harpeth Hills? I thought 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 18 were all above average golf holes. Best course I got the chance to play while in Nashville.  :D

Sydney, Australia here.

Budget Public - Muirfield Golf Club. 42 dollars for a weekend. Twilight golf for 15 bucks. Or Eastlakes GC near the city.

No budget public - There aren't any great public courses in the area that I can think of off the top of my head. You can get on a place like Twin Creeks though for 95 or 100 bucks.

Private - New South Wales GC, 70 bucks for members guest.

On another note, do courses in the US have 'twilight specials'? After a certain time they discount the price heavily.

Niagara Region, Ontario, Canada

Private (Access Not an Issue) -
Hamilton GCC (Harry Colt) is one of the top five courses in Canada and is about a half hour away if you drive really fast (which I would be excitedly doing if I got the invite).  In the region, Lookout Point (Walter Travis) sits on beautiful land in Fonthill with expansive vistas of the Niagara Escarpment and is a truly great design.  Cherry Hill (Travis) and Burlington GCC (Thompson) are also excellent and within a half hour drive of Niagara.

Matt,

Played there over forty years ago, a wonderful test, but it seemed to me it was always called Ancaster..

Bob,

You're right - most locals and members would refer to it as Ancaster but generally it's still known as Hamilton (ie: on ranking lists, on their website, etc)

Tim:

I agree completely with your Virginia list (previously a local area for me), but disagree somewhat with your Pawleys choices.

For Big-bucks Public, I think the Dunes Club is much better than Caledonia (#9 and, to some extent #18 knock Caledonia down a few notches for me).

For private, I think Bulls Bay, DeBordieu, and Reserve are all better than Wachesaw (though I agree that Wachesaw is a good, fun course!).

BTW, try to stop by in Camden sometime en route to Pawleys......

Thanks everyone for their lists.  Almost anytime I take or contemplate  a trip I wonder about the local golf even if I will not play on that trip.  I was hoping to get enough material for a bookmark I might keep for the local scoop on places I might visit and places I likely never will visit.  I think I have enough for that already but would appreciate hearing from as many people as possible - even if you agree with recommendations already posted.  If you have any description that would help one to imagine such a trip to your location and why you chose the courses you did, I would love to hear it.

I love the idea of someday wondering where to play in Wollongong and knowing I have the answer here.
