Photo Quiz for the winter. How well do you know your links?
« on: February 25, 2010, 04:17:37 PM »

Rule 1, if you cheat here the golfing Gods will know you for what you are, so guesses acceptable, using cyber footnotes isn’t.
Rule 2,

Part 1.
I think it was Donald Steel who first pointed out that beside many a great links there’s usually a caravan park(ed).   So name these links?  ;D

As three of those photo’s were taken while on the course with a fellow GCA member some will be got; but no 5 will surprise a lot of people.  Three also have members on here and all are favourites.
More to come.  I’ve tried not to use the same course twice but can’t guarantee not to (PS some labels are incorrect for those who are peeking).

no 8. Royal St. Davids, no. 9 Co. Sligo, no. 10 Co. Louth, no. 12 Lahinch

75% right, Padraig goes to the head of the class.

NO 9 YOu're on the right Island, try again.  the clue is there's a course in the background.  I.e. N0 10 is really Seapoint which is the next course along, if I have my Geography right.)

Extra homework will be set for those not trying hard enough!

1st set #2 - I believe I will be there in a fortnight's time as part of the Winter Tour Of England (and Wales); #4 - we were there not 9 months ago - hint for others - its in Ireland; #7 - my lips are sealed.

The one that is really perplexing me is #3.  That looks very familiar, but I can't place it.

Good quizzing Tony... If you want to be really pedantic with No.12, the answer is Lahinch Castle course... I know a few from the first set but like Sean, won't spoil the fun... although i'm surprised people didn't pick no.5 pretty quickly...

I believe No.3 is exactly where you're thinking Ville... Hole 15 green with the one shot 16th in the background...

I know No 3 but then I really should do.  There's a Boer War connection in that 'photo.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Tony, taking this to heart, I'm going to guess that you are pointing at the no longer existing chasm hole at old Biarritz in photo 14?... with Chiberta in the foreground...

I suspect 13 was taken from a different course to that for which the derelict building used to be the clubhouse?

Mark's disqualified by membership but I will say it:  #3 is Crail, the communications tower by the caravan park is memorable.

So far

1
You will be kicking yourself so hard you might as well book the ambulance now.
Common guys.
Clue:  you have to walk to the next village to get to the caravan park but this is a GCA fave.

2  Sean knows it’s the 18th at Aberdovey

3 Crail Balconie. Well done Ville/Mark (a member who was standing beside me when I took the photo –explanation of Boer reference please?) /Bill.

4 Sean again.  Portrush (9th?)

5 I’m reproducing it here because if you don’t hospitalise yourself with the first one you will this time.
Ally thinks he knows it. I'm challenging you to prove this, because for 51 weeks a year you won’t see this view. How come?
Va Bene, Ally?

6 Ballyliffen Cashel.   Donal/ Ally/ Christian (I’ll allow but I believe it only shows the one course?/Rory.

7 Pennard Sean.   Well tents change from day to day and again you must have been there that day.

8 Royal St David’s from Harlech Castle.  Padraig.

9   ?  Both the course in the picture get press here.

10 Background Seapoint (not played by me) Foreground Baltry/Co Louth.  Padraig /Ally

11 ?  Clue who is the guy in the photo and where might I have crushed him?
Clue 2 You might have to adjust the contrast but to his right there is a fairly distinctive feature.

12 Lahinch Cashen Padraig/. Ally

13 Princes from RSG.   Christian and Mark

14 Background Golf du Phare (trans Lighthouse) du Biarritz.  Well done Ally

More to follow.

15 is HCEG

Bill,

There's no caravan park in that photo, it's a coastguard post (with lodgings)

Tony,

16, the hole in the background is named Spion Kop.

Thanks Mark. Maybe not a Caravan Park, but if you look just below the Coast Guards there's a Caravan Park(ed). ;)

Yes 15 is Muirfiled, HCEG.
