I'm compelled to apologize for any harm I've done to this year's Armchair Architect Contest.  I was unaware that any action I was taking to learn would directly impact the outcome of the contest, and hope that any influence The Design Process thread may have had will be fleeting and ineffectual.  I am therefore going to stop posting any updates to my "test" routing until all entries have been submitted and Mr. Goerges is supportive of any renewal of the The Design Process.

I do want to state this in rebuttal.  In principle I disagree that it is tainting the competition, and am most disappointed to see words like honor and ethics being raised.  I also think that any true student--and therefore person that joined this site in good faith to learn and discuss golf architecture--could and should benefit greatly from the discussion on that particular thread.

I do want to publicly acknowledge Tom D and Charlie G for being interested and engaging regarding that thread.  I hope their participation continues after the thread recommences.

Charlie,

Is it possible to get a file of the site without the 40 acre grid scale? specifically in a cad dwg?

Charlie,

My name is Nick Campanelli.  I am new to Golf Atlas (I will post a new member intro shortly).  I was referred to this website by my friend and new member Jason Sloan.  I hope I'm not too late to post an entry for the design competition?  When is the deadline and do we submit to you?  I look forward to hearing back from you and participating in future discussions!

Re: 2nd Annual AAC. Contestants: BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH!
« Reply #79 on: March 02, 2010, 12:14:34 AM »
Just a quick check-in. I've had a busy couple of weeks and have at least one more. Therefore, the due date will be on March 15th (or the Ides of March). Sometime this week I hope to get a little tutorial about how to put together your entries for consumption by the judges. However I'll just say that your entry should consist of a routing plan and then at least one extra "page" (in the electronic sense of the word) in which you place descriptions, strategy, close-up images, cave-drawings etc. You can use as many pages as you like though (i.e. you may certainly do one page for each hole or something to that effect).

I've not had as much time to review the thread or answer questions as last time, but please keep pestering me if I haven't gotten to your question or if you need help. Best of luck to all.

Well Charlie's deadline has got me going with my first finalized routing again this year. Looks like I'm going with a par 73.

Any idea when the "tutorial" will be ready Charlie?

Okay, I'm going to push the due date back until the following weekend just because I am not quite ready to deal with it, and I know at least a couple of people could use some more time.

So the Due date will be March 21st. Hopefully this works for everyone, if you need more time, let me know. And I'll try to get the tutorial together yet! But if anyone has some tips/ideas to share on how you got yours together, please feel free to post.

So, it's March 20th and I have no idea how to submit my entry. Is the due date changing? Where's the tutorial?

Good Question Alex! Life has intervened since I made my statement about the tutorial.

First though, to submit the entry you'll just email it to me. What I envision is for you to save your design as a jpeg image and to write a description of your design (your vision for the course, any hole strategies you want to call out etc.) in a word-processor.

Now, there's no way I'm going to get a tutorial done for this thing, so I want to find out who needs help, what kind of help people might need, and adjust the due date if necessary. If you've put in a bunch of time and are not quite ready, I don't want to cut you off, we'll get something figured out.

So anyone who's having trouble, post here and let us know what the issues are. It's likely that either I or another competitor will have an answer to the question.

 8) Charlie,

Can you do something about this 65-75F and sunny weather??? its been too nice outside to play on a computer!.  though it was rainy and cool today!

I thought the ides of march was appropriate, but reality strikes without warning..

I thought the first day of spring was appropriate, till i lost that hour of sleep last week..

just one day of grace to evening of 22nd is all i may need, too many holes on that sight.. so i don;t have to staty up late on a school night..

Charlie,

Do you except PDF format?  They should read similar to a JPEG.  I have created boards for the routing that are currently saved out as PDFs to reduce the file size compared to a JPEG.

Nick,

Yes PDF is fine as well. In fact anything not in PDF I was going to convert to PDF anyway. I just assumed it would be less likely for folks to be able to do that.

Steve,

I think an extra day or two is fine.

By what method do you want to receive the submissions?  I scanned through the thread and couldn't find instructions.

My pdf is 9mb, FWIW.

Michael, feel free to email it to me at ccgoergesAThotmail.com (replace AT with @).

Gary, Garland, Steve, and everyone else running short on time, no problem, just forward it along when you get a chance; hopefully some time in the next several days.

All, thanks for your effort and patience. We're really going to have a good turnout this year I think. Definitely into the double-digits.

Charlie,

Can I start The Design Process back up after everyone is submitted?  Or is there still a riff about that thread?  Tom D was really going above and beyond over there.

Ben, I think that thread was awesome. As soon as you get a go ahead from Charlie please start it up again.

Charlie, sorry for being a bit late with my submission, I will get it done asap.

Ben, I think it's fine, once everyone has submitted their designs. I'm not worried about the judges being influenced by that thread because we've got 3 architects and the emperor, they've definitely got their own ideas about what they're looking for.

I'll let you know when everyone is in and it's safe to go.

BTW, I've gotten six entries already and they're looking fantastic! Great job so far everyone, and I'm looking forward to seeing and studying many more entries.

Hi All,

I've been incommunicado the last couple of days (been in rehab  ;)) I want to do a "last call" for entries before I send the whole lot off to the judges.

I've given some leeway this time around, hopefully that's cool with everyone. This year we have more entries than last year (entries significantly outnumber judges!) and I think it's going to be a great contest.
