Those are very interesting drawings. In Bob Cosby's essay he was very critical of JH Taylor because of his dislike of central hazards. Based on you drawing he must have gotten over that dislike later in his career. The von Limburger drawing reminds me a little bit of Simpson.

Hawtree fils wrote a piece saying once his father and Taylor hooked up it wasn't the famous name designing the courses!

Melvyn Morrow sent me a series of additional drawings.  Rather than try to paraphrase the information in Melvyn's email, I have reprinted the substance of it below, although I will break it down into multiple replies since the attachments are too large for a single post:

Hi Ed

Thanks for the e-mail details. As I said I have a few sketches (more still filed away) from books, like The Golf Guide and others that have some sketch designs of golf course in GB & I. When I have time or come across more of them I will forward the drawings to you.

The list includes the following courses

Royal Aberdeen Golf Course – Moved to Balgownie Links in 1888 (book 1897)
Blairgowrie Gold Course at Lansdowne Estate  from 1889 (book 1895
Bournemouth Park Course (Book 1896)
Crawford Golf Course (book 1896)
Cumbrae Golf Course 1887 (book 1896)
Dunfermline Golf Course at Ferryhills 1894 (newspaper 1894)
King Edward Bay Golf Course at Howstrake Isle of Man 1893 (book 1896)
Kettering Golf Course 1891 (book 1895)
Lanark Golf Course  (book 1897)
Machrie Golf Course on Islay 1891 (book 1896)

(highlighted in red is closed)

Some of the course are now closed i.e. Crawford; Killern; Uisguintuie, plus one or two of the others have also moved to new courses. I also enclose Lanark again being from The Golfers Guide rather than a newspaper and I attached a low resolution copy of Muirfield but it will still blows up to show Hall Blyth signature from December 1891.

Kind regards

Melvyn

Thanks to Melvyn for his contributions!  I may need some help with the index on these.

Ed

Continuing on with the list of courses from Melvyn's email:

Quote
The list includes the following courses

Peterhead Golf Course at St Fergus Links (book 1897)
Selkirk Golf course (book 1896)
St Andrews New Course (newspaper 1895)
Uisguintuie Golf Course on Islay 1896 (newspaper 1896)

I also include Dornock not Dornoch near Tain but Dornock at Crieff now closed.
(highlighted in red is closed)

And the final installment from Melvyn's list:

Quote
The list includes the following courses

Cruden Bay Golf Course 1894-1899 (book 1897)*

Killearn Golf Course 1896 (book 1896)

Muirfield Golf Course 1890 (from Muirfield and dated Dec 1891)

Newburgh Golf Course  (book 1897)

Wellingborough Golf Course (book 1896)

(highlighted in red is closed)

The Cruden bay sketch is the initial one pre the requirement of St Olaf course which required a re design. There are reports that the course was built prior due to the changes but they are rather sketchy.

Thanks Melvyn!

Just to add some levity to the thread - Here is a picture of a some routing work I did at a site in SD.  The wind was blowing so hard I gave up using the topo map.

Right Brain-Left Brain  - No Brain

Ron,

I love this one, thanks for posting it!

Most people can take the time to sit at a drawing board or computer and produce half decent drawings or plans, but the ability to sketch on site is in this computer age, a dying art I feel? As an architect of buildings rather than courses, I've had to sketch plans or details on unfinished walls, bits of timber, scraps of paper and the obligatory napkin, while on site, to get my ideas across. Good to see that its a skill that GCAs need also.

Cheers,

James

Agreed! Just very cool!

Ed,
I always claimed that 'Exile on Main St.' was the best album ever. That definition has faded a little, but it's definitely up there. This post/thread ranks right up there with 'Exile.' Thanks to you and all the contributors for making this happen.

A couple of early ones from Pete Dye at Crooked Stick Golf Club, Carmel, Ind...

First is his original drawing for a par-71course (dated late 1963 or early 1964), which he used to solicit members (and funds) before ground was broken. Neither Pete nor Alice can recall who did this rendering.

Pete's name for the course at that time: "Muir of Golf" -- mimicking the name of James Braid's circa 1875 layout "Muir of Ord" (gold) northwest of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. The course Pete and Alice eventually construct bears no resemblance to the drawing of the "never built" Muir of Golf...

Next, the real Crooked Stick (par-72),  in a drawing completed shortly after construction and seeding of the back nine (dated November 18, 1965). Due to a lack of funds (from slow real estate sales) construction of the front nine becomes delayed until spring of '66 and seeding is completed that fall. The entire 18 hole Crooked Stick Golf Club opens for play in late spring 1967. Again, the artist is unknown...

Fox Chapel found and restored the original Raynor course map a few years ago. I believe they donated it to USGA. Don't know if it ever got posted here but it should be.

Your attachment says 1916, which I think is right. I believe that is the course pre-Tillinghast.

Dobb's Ferry Links.

For the record (that is, for the index at the top of this thread) the layout posted earlier and labeled 'Dobbs Ferry Links"  is for the original 9 holes of what is now known as the Ardsley Country Club (or actually at the time 'The Ardsley Casino and Club").  This 9 was laid out by Willie Dunn.  He immediately laid out a second 9 the next year on ground just above the top of this picture (that is east of Broadway, the picture is oriented with East on top and Hudson River on the bottom).  This next 9 holes started with the new 8th hole and ran thru the new 16th.   What is shown on this routing as 8 and 9 became 17 and 18.

I am almost certain that Joe's original post is correct and the typo is in the name on the photo.  That routing is clearly of the Upper course, which hosted the 1936 US Open.

Ardsley CC 1915 (further to Joe Bausch's earlier post and my comment above).  Here is a routing for Ardsley from The Evening Telegram March 16, 1915.  This reflects a number of changes made by Willie Tucker to the original Willie Dunn routing.  Just to confuse things this particular routing is laid out with South at the top; the one Joe posted had East at the top.

Ed,thanks for taking the time to teach me how to post images!  I think I am finally getting the hang of it!

(also, just to clarify re post 126 and 142: they both should really be indexed under Ardsley.  There never was a 'Dobbs Ferry Links' (that is, other than on the caption on that newspaper clipping).  In 1895 those 9 holes were built as part of the "Ardsley Casino and Club', the property for which was located in the towns of Dobbs Ferry and Irvington. Just after the turn of the century the club's name was officially changed from 'Ardsley Casino and Club' to the 'Ardsley Country Club'.  But no such entity as 'Dobbs Ferry Links' ever existed.)
