When you are reviewing the drawings can you tell me the oldest drawing you have that illustrates grassing lines? The question comes from a discussion had on this site about when they first started showing up on plans.

Michael, its impossible to say since so many of them are not dated.  But take a look at the first picture in Reply #50 for a 1912 map of Chicago Golf Club that clearly shows fairway lines.  So the practice goes back at least that far.

Thanks Joe...I think we desperately need to bring back the "Snake Fence" and "Dismal Swamp" as hazards in the modern game.

Interesting that the Tuxedo Club had an "Alps"....Ardsley had one back then, as well.

I'll try to post a few more that I have over the next couple of days.  In the meantime, if anyone else has anything, please continue to add them or feel free to send them to me and I will do so.

Great post, I am just a little confused.....On the Seaview routing map in Galloway twp.  I see it says that it is along James Leeds road.  Im almost positive that it is Jimmie Leeds Road.  Just wondering if anybody knew anything about that???

Does anyone know a place or places where some of these may be for sale?  I have St. Andrews and Pebble Beach in my study framed and I like the routing maps, architectural drawings much better than pictures of courses.

I assume they are the property of the clubs not the architect but I have not seen them for sale at any clubs.

Thanks.

Here is a link to the Tillinghast society section of sketches and routing plans.  I am not comfortable copying any of the images so I will just provide the link.

Paul, I don't know about anything that has been posted on this thread, but Forrest Richardson has some nice drawings for sale on Golframes.com...

Paul,

1>  As maybe mentioned previously,  for  Ross courses,  you can visit the  Tufts Archives  web site, http://www.tuftsarchives.org/

From home page you go to 'Donald Ross' and then  'List of Ross Courses' and then  'View...' .   You will a list of Ross courses, and the documents for each course.  Tufts has the  'Ross' layouts for a number of courses, and has the individual hole sketches in some instances.

I noted Tufts has routing plans for a number of courses and quickly noted a few courses often discussed at GCA,

Aronimick
Holston Hills
Linville
Longmeadow
Oak Hill
Seminole

I ordered a copy of Ross' Seminole plan and was happy with the result.

2>    At  eBay,  if you search   'golf course maps'   you can find a number of the 'modern' color renderings of the old courses.  A few are in the style of the 'World Atlas of Golf'  if you know what I mean.  It is the style of oblique aerial sketchings that I first noticed in World Atlas of Golf back in the mid 80s.
