From an early 1970s placemat, I believe this is the original Stiles/Van Kleek plan for Brigantine Golf Club in NJ, circa 1925, which opened in 1927.   It was one of the first planned golf course communities integrating golf with housing in the northeast, I'm led to believe.

Who designed the original Franklin course? What year did the course open? Was A.W. Tillinghast ever involved there?

Don't rightly know, but I think it's been said that the club's pro, George Sayers, was responsible for the original.

George Sayers laid out the first nine holes of what became Torresdale Frankford when the clubs moved and combined around 1915.   Ross added nine and modified the others in the 20s.

I had no idea that George Sayers did any architecture. Although I guess it is not surprising for that era. I have 2 sets of George Sayers (Ben Sayers' son) irons from 1952. One a standard set and one a "shankless" set where the hosel wraps behind the face down at the heel. My dad remembered going down to Merion with his friend for each of them to be fitted. The clubs are stainless and have "Hand Forged in Scotland" on them. I believe that they were made by Ben Sayers' company  in Scotland and stamped George Sayers if shipped to the US. The persimmon driver is a work of art.
