As a Cincinnati native, Joe Bausch shared a July 7, 1895
The Cincinnati Enquirer article with me last month that he had stumbled upon during some of his research. The article included the below routing of the "Longworth Golf Links."
While Longworth is a name synonymous with Cincinnati, I had never heard of a Longworth Golf Links and had to do a little more digging. Although the article didn't mention a specific location of the course, the routing did label an intersection: Cowards, which does not exist anymore, and Grandin, which, while long, is where the current Cincinnati Country Club is located.
Tom Cecil schooled me on some CCC history and mailed me a copy of the CCC history book and mentioned that Cincinnati Country Club merged with Cincinnati Golf Club around the turn of the century and that CGC at one time had only nine holes. By comparing the below 1897 routings and land features, one of which was an update from 1906, and by comparing the original CCC and CGC member rosters to the key stakeholders from the
Enquirer article, I am fairly confident that the "Longworth Golf Links" was simply used as a placeholder by the writer (or the eventual club members) until the CGC was formally established.
Thanks to Joe for sharing and Tom for helping!
