Thanks to Chris Buie for this beautiful drawing of Ross' original 9 holes at Thendara Country Club...

Can anyone figure out what is going on with the 4th green?

Either a swale or a ridge?

I think it is a hogback.  Seen it depicted that way before.

Mark,

I have two questions for you.  The Jimmie Austin routing, did you put the original routing overlay on that or is that on display at the course?  I'm curious because I have a photo of the original routing that they had hanging in the proshop when I visited there several years ago.

Also, on the Southern Hills routings, did you notice how the 7th looked much more like a slight dogleg originally and is now much more straight away?  That green used to be further to the left and had a swale short of it.  I think they moved the green due to drainage issues at some point, but I have not been able to pinpoint when.

Oh, one more, do you know what changes Heckenkamper made at Twin Hills?  Other than 14 and 15, that course really didn't need much work in my opinion.

Joe
Isn't William Watson responsible for this design?

If someone would care to go to: http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,51574.msg1179885.html#msg1179885
they could lift the maps of Wilmslow Golf Club and include them in this thread. They were taken from the club's centenary book.

I have a few routing maps that are bigger than A4 and therefore too big to scan on my very basic system. I would happily post these to someone who has the facility to post them on this thread. These include Hirono (colour and black and white), Frilford Heath, Biella Le Bettule and Bath (Colt). If I look through my files I'm sure I can locate many more. I also have some lovely old black and white pictures of Hirono at about A4 size if someone has the facility to post them on GCA at a decent resolution. E-mail or IM me.

Thanks Mark!  Here are the Wilmslow maps from the referenced thread:

1903

1910

1920's

1937

If you send me the larger maps mentioned in your last post I'll be happy to figure out a way to get them posted.  I will send you a separate IM.  Thanks!

Chris, it is on display at the golf course.

Also, on the Southern Hills routings, did you notice how the 7th looked much more like a slight dogleg originally and is now much more straight away?  That green used to be further to the left and had a swale short of it.  I think they moved the green due to drainage issues at some point, but I have not been able to pinpoint when.

I thought I recalled reading that the green was once closer to the creek that runs down the right side of the hole.  I didn't know that the green was once left of its current location, though it does look that way based on the two pictures.  So the 7th green has been moved twice?

Oh, one more, do you know what changes Heckenkamper made at Twin Hills?  Other than 14 and 15, that course really didn't need much work in my opinion.

I don't know specifically, but there were 72 changes listed -- no idea how significant (or not) they are.
