Mike,

I've heard that the routing is supposedly intact. I'm still trying to figure out the 15th green, looks like a draftsman's tyop,  :)  and #4 looks like it's missing a bunker or two.

Jim-I know Weequahic Park in Newark was also an Olmsted project and currently has some holes I can’t believe were included in the original design.

Tim,

I think there was a dozen years between the time OB designed Weequahic Park and George Low designed the golf course.

Philadelphia CC, 1899

There is a 1922 map of PCC from 1922 posted by Joe Bausch that can be found at reply #509, along with this description from the club itself...

Founded in 1897, Bala Golf Club has a long and storied history. The roots of the Bala Golf Club reach back to the spring of 1893 when two men - George Reach and Charles Hickman - watched a well-dressed foursome play the links along a City Avenue golf course. Getting the idea to start their own club, the two men joined with a group of prominent Philadelphians and purchased a plot of farmland just inside the city limits on Belmont Avenue - a location that was easily accessible by trolley or train and built a course on the site, roughly half way between the original homes of Philadelphia Country Club and Overbrook Country Club. That site, laid out by Willie Tyler, provided the club members with a 9 hole, 2,747 yard layout with a par of 35 1/2. Although the original course was higly regarded, the pressure to go to an 18 hole course convinced the membership to act, and, in 1923, William S. Flynn, a noted designer (among them, Rolling Green, Huntington Valley, Cherry Hills in Denver, The Country Club in Brookline, Seaview, Shinnecock Hills, and Lancaster CC), was brought in to renovate the course. Flynn's challenge was to build nine additional holes, fold them into the Tyler design, and fit it all into the existing acreage. He succeeded admirably.

...but it appears that there were already 18 holes two dozen years earlier, so have I mixed this up with another PCC??

Sven--

Thanks for posting reply #1305.  Very interesting to me because that raw land on the other side of the Snake River shown in the photo is the pioneer fruit orchard that became my course, Canyon Springs GC.  We roamed this canyon as kids, not much spoiling our love of this wild landscape by playing golf.  When my father built his own 9-holer in 1972-4 (I helped some), the plan was to add it as the second nine for BLCC, a plan eventually rejected by the membership.  Instead, they used his "first-course" architect, Max Mueller, to build their second nine (Max's office was in our maintenance shed).  Ten years or so later, my father built his second nine.

I haven't read enough of this thread to know how people use it.  However, perhaps for the first time in the many years I've been on this site, finally there is a post about a topic that I am probably the definitive expert source.  I was born in 1949, the year BLCC opened for play, and have been intimately associated with these properties for 70 years.  If anyone wants to know anything about these courses, I'm your huckleberry.  The routing map posted, for example, is remarkably accurate to what was built.

I showed Tom D. around both these courses a few years ago and his reviews are in his CG, vol 3.

"...intimately associated with these two courses for 70 years" with a rather major gap of 22 years during which about the only golf I played was when I visited my parents.  I do know the entire history.  These properties were homesteaded and were about the first settlements in an area that is now home to about 100,000 folks.  The homesteader, I.B. Perrine, was the guy responsible for figuring out how to finance the dams and canals to irrigate the sagebrush desert of South Central Idaho, some 1.4 million acres.  His own homestead was a sandy and rocky wasteland not good for much more than fruit trees and grazing animals.  I like to think he wouldn't mind they were eventually converted to golf courses, rather like the original links, and became symbols of the prosperity his vision created.
