The architectural evolution of East Lake #1 is a puzzle. George Adair re-routed the old Bendelow course (see Am. Golfer Nov. and Dec., 1912). The Adair routing is, essentially, the current routing. The only evidence of specific work by Ross was his addition of some bunkers in 1914 or so. Yet Ross claims East Lake #1 as a remodel.

My guess is that East Lake was happy to have Ross claim the course. But based on what we can confirm about what he did there, the claim is a bit thin. (BTW, there is nothing in the Tufts Archive connecting Ross and EL #1.)

Adding to the puzzle is that Ross did the same work at the same time a few miles away at Druid Hills, but did not list Druid Hills as one of his remodels.

Everyone I have talked to who was around to play the (NLE, 1976) No. 2 course at East Lake thought it was the better of the two EL courses. Remnants of a couple if its holes are still evident in the Charlie Yates short course. There was talk after it was built of creating a composite course with No. 1 for tournaments. I don't know if that ever happened. Logistics usually dictated use of the No. 1 course alone.

EL has one of the original drawings of Ross's No. 2 course. It is magnificent. Unlike the No. 1 course, there is lots of material on it in the Tufts Archive.

I had once assumed that Bob Jones had been involved in picking Ross and in the planning and construction of No. 2. He was by '27/'28 a very prominent figure in the game. But I have found nothing to indicate that Jones was involved. If anyone has other information, I would love to see it.

Sven posted this overlay of Multnomah:

I came across another view:

The city offered a prize for the best design and the first layout was by Henry I. Jones and it was said that Vernon Macan might give it a go. The city was looking to have the course designed by a Portland architect, but the final plan was by H.Chandler Egan. The course may have also been known as West Hills. It was built on a county farm that once housed the poor.

The city also had a contest to name the course:

There was a plaster cast made of the property for the contestants to look at. Here's the topo:

Pretty sure the course that Jim is discussing in this old post was the West Hills Municipal GC designed by H. Chandler Egan which was built on the Multnomah farm, hence the confusion with Multnomah GC that was built by William Lock.  Here's a plan of the Lock course:

in the previous reply Sven is correct. The 9 course was known as West Hills when I played it in the early 1950s. It was put out of commission in the mid 50s to build the original site of OMSI (about the 7th green) and relocation of the local zoo, which took the place of 2-4. The rest became Hoyt Park Pitch and Putt, which was butchered by the Forestry Center and laid to rest by a Vietnam Memorial. The exit from Canyon Road is still intact and gives reference. A family tree member was killed in a newspaper helicopter crash on the course before I was born,
