2010 Year's TV Viewing; The Journey Ends Poorly.
« on: January 07, 2010, 04:18:11 PM »
This year turns out to be not too bad GCAwise for television viewing. Although it does climax with a bit of an ebb.

This year most of us will likely only get to live vicariously through what is televised. Starting with Kapalua, in the midst of a south bound polar jet stream affecting the whole country, who cant help but salivate at this beautiful modern design, complete with bonus coverage ... bounce and roll. Then there's always hope someone will make Waialae CC look more like a Raynor. PGA West will be a breather before heading on to Torrey Pines, Riviera and Pebble Beach. The only time that trio should be mentioned in the same breath. But 2/3 ain't shabby. After that it's a long wait until Augusta, with a small stint south of the Border with two weeks in Arizona and one in Mexico, winding up with the Florida stint, and lord help us, a Trump course in Puerto Rico. This years Majors will be stellar. ANGC. Pebble, TOC, and (OK 3/4) Whistling Straits.
There will be a few more highlights with Aroniminick and St. Georges' (canada). Since I'm not familiar with all these courses it will be curious to see how they translate to the Tv screen.

Annandale and the new changes at Cog Hill might peak some interest, but after that, nothing seems to stir any desire to view.

Thoughts comments corrections welcome.

Other notables; Colonial, Muirfield Village Old White Course ? (I'm not famiiliar)

Mac, Sorry, my bad. Thanx for the pick up. But in my own defense. I don't watch the LPGA for the architecture.  :o

Adam:

I actually think WStraits makes for terrific television viewing (title of your thread ;)); it looks like few other courses in the United States. Whether it's a great piece of golf architecture is another matter...

It probably beats the heck out of the last place that was matched with Augusta, Pebble and TOC in a major season. ;)

Is that Annandale up by the Rose Bowl in Pasadena?  What's going on there?

Sure you do, Adam.  It's just the GOLF COURSE architecture you are paying attention to  :)

Another nice catch Bill.
No, it's not the Annandale in Ca. Dern it.  It's in Mississippi   :'(

Ok I just checked the LPGA schedule and apparently they don't seem it fitting to add the name of the course. They do give a location.

So, Oakmont is one. What's in South Port England?

Adam...

you mention the Old White Course.

I am 99% sure that is located at White Sulphur Springs, WV on the grounds of the Greenbrier.

Original Raynor/MacDonald...restored by Lester George.

This is all from the top of my head...but I think that is right.

Yes Mac, Mention it because I've it mentioned here. Apologizes for your beloved East Lake, but, we see it every year and it is one that does not translate well in 2 D.

  Adam,

Do you agree that because TOC,PB and WS all have public access that intersest in those courses and popularity in those courses will result in more play and architectual interest this year?

Anthony, No, I believe the architecture is of merit for tv viewing, not it's corporate structure. Public Private makes no never mind to me.

Keith, I'm not sure what exactly is wrong with it. I sense there are several detractors who can answer that question better than me. I suppose we could start with the closing hole, move on to the turf issues and possibly end up with the snaking par 5 through wet lands. Another feeling I get is that relies heavily on ater views to pull at the heart strings of the masses versus providing the world class gca the other three venues have.

Tom  Yost, Thanks for that.

JVB, What was that venue? Valhalla?

#18 is certainly different. It could probably warrant its own separate thread. I didn't really notice any turf issues when I was there in early September. Perhaps I was too drawn to Lake Michigan that had my attention on a cloudless 75 degree day. The snake par 5 was my only birdie, so I'm probably biased when that hole gets brought up.

The less you know, the better. It's an abomination. The Ryder Cup Committee in Europe is in serious danger of devaluing the competition with their choice of venues.

Quite simply, if you have enough money to give them, they'll play it in your garden. It's a joke.

As for the ladies at Oakmont, if the course is in anything like normal condition then it will be an utter bloodbath.

Here's the thread on the 18th:

There is a rather long, involved story about the evolution of the 5th hole. Dye and Kohler, in turning a former military dump into a golf course, ran into some opposition from the state natural resources department over the removal of some wetlands to create one of the shore-hugging holes. The course, built during the Bush I era policy of "no net loss of wetlands," needed to find some place to create/restore some wetlands to compensate for the loss of wetlands on the lake shore. Thus, the 5th was built as a hole that wound its way through newly created wetlands.

When it comes to European Ryder Cup venues money talks, and the winner is usually the highest bidder :(
