Mike Strantz Artwork Available For Your Collection
« on: January 03, 2010, 03:30:27 PM »
Mike Strantz was not only an excellent course architect, but also a very talented artist. The construction drawings he created for his golf designs are legendary.

Now, some of those drawings are available for purchase! I wish I had found this website before Christmas... I would have put in an order with Santa for a couple of these:

Mike,
Thanks so much for finding this and posting it.  I'll be making a couple of purchases soon.
Hope you have had a wonderful holiday.
Best regards,
A.G.

A.G. - I've sent a link to my wife in hopes that she will favor me on my birthday in April!!!

When are we going to get together at a Strantz course... or, ANY course for that matter???

Well, the easy answer is at Caledonia/TB in July.  I also have a week off in March when my wife will be working, so a day trip to Old Union or something like that might be a possibility.

I've just exchanged emails with Heidi Strantz, Mike's wife, who tells me that there will be more of Mike's sketches available in the coming months.  She was very gracious, and responded to my question very, very quickly.

Also, it is noteworthy that a portion of each purchase goes to the Hollings Cancer Center in Charleston, where Mike received treatment, and donations that accompany the purchase price will be used to both promote awareness of oral cancer and to help the families of cancer victims who are under financial pressure.

I've purchased a couple of prints; a pen and ink of the 14th hole at True Blue, and a watercolor of the 8th at True Blue.  I love both of these holes, and lithographs by Mr. Strantz will be wonderful to own.

I'd urge those of you who are fans of Mike's work to keep the thread going for a few days in order to make sure that word gets out as far as possible.  Again, thanks to Mike Whitaker for finding this and posting in the first place.

I thought there might be SOME discussion of this; I was wrong in a BIG way!

By the way, there is a memorial tournament for Mike Strantz at Tot Hill Farm in November to raise money for the Hollings Cancer Center; the total this year was nearly $8000.  Wouldn't it be cool if we could put two or three foursomes from GCA.com into the tournament next year?  I know that's a long way out from now, but anybody interested?

If the date works for me I'm in. I'll probably make it a two or three day trip and add a round or two at TR.

Let me know when Heidi alerts you about the additional prints for sale online. Thanks!

Very, very cool stuff. Great.

Check out the border artwork on the Tobacco Road sketches. Quite unique... for golf course design drawings, particularly!

Michael,
Thanks for bringing this site to our attention.

I would be interested in attending the fundraiser next fall, or any gathering at a Strantz course here on the east coast. I have played Tobacco Road, but have not seen the others yet.

I REALLY, REALLY wanted the Tobacco Road routing drawing, but was pretty sure my wife would have limitations on the size she would allow.  She's an artist that has worked extensively with pen and ink herself, and I'm hoping that she will see the finished product and allow more to come in.  As you might apprehend, I am NOT allowed much sayso in the decorating decisions of the castle.

A.G.:

Your wife's limitation on the size of the Tobacco Road routing plan has nothing to do with the topless cowgirl depicted in the top left corner, I hope  ;D

I have nothing new to add, but I am determined to keep this thread on the first page for a few days.  This is for THREE good causes, and a great opportunity to discuss GCA at the same time.

Anybody have their favorite Strantz hole as one of the pictures offered on the site?

Steve,
Glad to hear you ordered; I just got an email this afternoon that my True Blue prints have shipped, so I should have them early next week.  Nice to be part of the art world!

A.G. - What do you think about Mike's drawing of the 8th green at True Blue versus what is there today. I knew there was a lot more sand around the green before the post-construction "softening," but I don't remember it being an island. Do you have any recollection of what was originally there?

Mike,
I will defer to your memory on that.  I think your time at True Blue predates mine significantly.  Whatever the case, it is a somewhat more benign hole today than the picture.  I say somewhat because when I've missed that green, I don't think I've ever gotten up and down.

I wonder if some of the difference would be from just bermuda grass intruding into the waste areas, which is what happened at Sawgrass over the years.  That might be a downside of the limited cart path construction at TB, given that we fill bermuda divots with sand to facilitate growth.

Here is an overhead view of the 8th green. I don't think it ever was completely surrounded by sand, but I know there was a lot more at one time. The 8th hole was probably altered more than any other from tee to green.

Michael,
That green is difficult enough as it is; if it had sand all the way around on the "slice" side along with the elevation and the fall off to the back, it would be a real brute.

But I love the hole.  Great risk-reward tee shot, and real premium on distance control on the approach.

I think that the 7-8-9 stretch of True Blue is a great sequence of par 3, 4, and 5.  7 is a very tough par 3, #8 a shortish risk-reward par 4, and #9 is a very cool par 5 with some great risk-reward possibilities if you drive it well enough have the opportunity to go for it on the second shot.

My prints of #8 and #14 at True Blue arrived today, and they are very, very nice; even my-wife-the-artist was duly impressed.

For those of you who are considering placing an order, I would urge you to go ahead.  We are not talking about a lot of money here, less by far than the greens fees at most upscale public courses, and you will be doing good things in the process for at least three good causes that we know of.

Give it some thought.

I purchased the Bulls Bay routing and True Blue #14. Prints arrived yesterday and the detail is amazing! It's easy to see why Mike amazed so many with his sketches. Great collectible!!!
