Matter of semantics or some other branch of linguistics, but I believe that GB should be together, as "Great" and "Britain" are not separate by any stretch.  Count me as one who would like to see the list.

Yes, I noticed no Prestwick immediately.  No mention of St Enodoc, Woking, Sligo, Formby nor Deal (and a few others I would certainly put in).  But I expect, and this is par for the course, the list is heavily weighted with championship courses taking too many slots.

The Modern list is woeful as well from the perspective of courses getting listed that don't really deserve to make a list even if they are the best of the genre.  The mag would heve been better off listing say 10 moderns and 50 classics.

The one course on the Classic list that I haven't seen is Wallasey.  Darwin wrote very fondly of it, but by the time I lived over there, it had all been changed, and no one thought highly of it at all ... it never made UK magazines' lists of the top 100 in the UK.

Has someone done a lot of work there in the past 10-20 years?  Does anyone here rate it ahead of Walton Heath, Swinley Forest, Hoylake, and Brancaster, as it is ranked?

Minor work has occurred in recent years which includes a new par 5 which is a good hole.  I wouldn't place Wallasey above any of the ones you mentioned because teh flatter holes let the over-all quality down quite a bit.  That said, I have a lot of time for Wallasey and prefer it to all of the ones you mentioned because there are several thrilling holes with much to admire.  At the end of the day Wallasey certainly should be in anybody's top 100 of GB&I.  Whether that merits its lofty rating in the Golfweek list is doubtful however.  I would hazard a guess and say you would give it a 6.

I've only played Hoylake of the courses you list (Buda 2006 at both courses) but found Hoylake well ahead of Wallasey in my personal opiinion.

However, it is a terrific course most of the way, but some dull holes in the flat area of the course.  Just a handful of those however.  There is a lot of heaving ground and big dunes to be navigated.  I enjoyed it a lot and would definitely play there again if in the vicinity of Hoylake.

One cool element there is a neat old clubhouse with an oil painting of Bob Jones painted while he was there for the 1930 Open when Wallasey was the second qualifier.

It's also the home of Dr. Frank Stableford, who invented his scoring system (pick up after net double) we were told because of the deep hay both sides of the dogleg right second hole, a long par 4.  If they'd just mowed that stuff, there wouldn't have been a Stableford in all likelihood!

Yet again proving that these lists are just a total waste of time.

Proportional representation or any form based upon it leads to compromise, pleasing few and cause concern and hopefully just serious debate if we are lucky.

We can’t even understand let alone agree with each other on GCA.com, so why produce a list for the golfing public at large? Are we meant to be in awe for those responsible for a fudged compromise or congratulate them in producing a load of old rubbish? Then again we all have the right to our opinion – well only those who are deemed to meet the correct criteria.

So by showing their right to say what they feel – I say good for them, as for the list, it is well filed in the waste paper bin for posterity.

Sean, St. Enodoc is #39.  I've played 28 of the best classic.  I might move some of them around and can think of a few i might include but it is not unlike most other lists.

The modern list shows the dearth of quality new courses being built in GB&I. I find that list more interesting.

Pretty savvy business decision to go more global, hopefully, increasing the number of subscribers without much out of pocket costs.

I know there's a Mexico and Caribbean list. Is there a Canadian?

Adam,

Not yet.  But given that there are lists for casino, muni, residential, new, carribian & mexico, state, classic, GB&I classic and new it can't be far behind.... ;)

Tommy,

I agree that the modern list is perhaps more interesting...the top 12 seem a bit of a jumble.  I'd be very interested in some of the locals comments....

I just think it's nice that Turnberry is not number 1 like the last GB&I list I saw.

Of course, I still believe these lists don't work.
