Finish the writing on Donald Ross by Grantland Rice
« on: December 20, 2009, 11:58:34 AM »
Recently I read an interesting paragraph penned by noted sports writer Grantland Rice in 1916.  Here is your chance to see how you think he might have completed the following:

...Ross, the noted golf architect, who is one of the greatest bunker manufacturers in the world, has a wonderful system.  After remodeling a course and suggesting new traps and bunkers, Donald...

Just what did Donald do then?

No, but as the contestants on the Family Feud used to say:  good answer!   ;D

Hints: it does involve leaving and an armored car.

I got it.  He leaves, goes and gets and armored car, brings it back to the site, and buries it under 12 feet of topsoil to get proper elevation for the green. :D

Does have to do with aesthetics?

Here is the full statement by Rice:

...Ross, the noted golf architect, who is one of the greatest bunker manufacturers in the world, has a wonderful system.  After remodeling a course and suggesting new traps and bunkers, Donald hops into his armored car, surrounded by a guard of 30 armed men to drive away the infuriated duffers.

There was a strong American movement toward scientific bunkering around that time, and Ross was a leader in that movement.

Joe -

One of the interesting (and ironic) things about comments like Rice's is that at the time many of the more strategic golf courses then being built by Ross and others were criticized for having too many bunkers. My guess is that the criticisms were really about the new way that Ross and others were using bunkers. Not the number of them.

Does the "system" imply location and use on the golf course or the actual construction method?

I've heard from numerous sources that Ross was careful to construct bunkers that would feed the balls off the faces.

Rice was discussing the frequency of bunkers used by Ross. There were number of articles written during that timeframe about Ross's new more heavily bunkered designs and the effect they had on the poor duffer. Ross had become somewhat notorious around that time.

I'd say both frequency of bunkers and his tendancy to build them with flashed up faces, where often the sand used was inconsistent, and though perhaps designed to feed balls down to the bottom resulted in more buried balls in the flashed up faces.  The sand wedge for much of Ross's early career wasn't invented yet, leaving a lot of 'infuriated duffers' in fried egg lies, I would think.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Would the duffers be infuriated with Ross' Top Shot bunkers at this point?  Were they really too short to be in play then for other than the duffers?
