Sean the fairways are all generous and this year the semi had extra width as well, the course never dried out so the rough stayed thick all year long. Usually by early August the rough thins out and by Deal week the long rough is whispy and finding balls simple, that didn't happen this year. Shots 30-40 yards wide of the centre line will be punished.

There was some serious rough thinning last winter and it's in progress for this winter as well.

You'll notice some decent changes at Deal on your next visit, hundreds of yards of rubber (grow through) matting has vastly improved the paths, some more natural bunkering and the greens are stunning.

Angus:

Waterwood National was a cool course, but it has been closed now for a few years.

Maybe you can find room for The Old Course in its absence!

Since I don't have the experience or access of many of this site, I thought I'd go through this exercise to see what I came up with. Most of this is around the Ohio area, but there are a few outsiders.

What a difference 13 months make for me. 8 of my top 25 are new. I have had two new #1s in that timeframe. And possibly one on Saturday that may find itself in the top 25. I still don't have experience/access, but I can easily say I have been blessed.

I think this is in order. Top 10 for sure.

I updated. It's the one in Canton, OH. Some may notice I have three Ohio public courses on my list, but not Longaberger. I have played it, and while I think Longaberger is fine, it doesn't crack my top 25.

If/When I make it back to Minnesota, I do plan on venturing north for a few days to hit up Northland and the Legends courses.

I'll go the Sean A route, with my favorite 25 (I think they're in order):

Friar's Head
Essex County Club
Kingsley
NGLA
Lawsonia Links

Old Elm
Crystal Downs
Shinnecock
Boston Golf Club
Chicago Golf Club

Colorado Golf Club
Camargo
Piping Rock
The Country Club
Bandon Trails

Shoreacres
Old MacDonald
Old Sandwich
Lost Dunes
Blue Mound

Streamsong Red
Hyde Park G&CC
The Dunes Club

Based on what I saw, I expect Sand Valley C&C to enter the list in the top 10, if not top 5.

I'm going to go with my favorite as well and follow suit with Sean and Jason here. I tried to categorize them given in my mind I always lean in the direction of links golf.

L = Links, LL = Links Like, O = Ocean, H = Heathland (although not all of these were easily definable and some of the ones I defined as such don't even have heather), P = Parkland

L = 12
H = 6
O = 3
P = 2
LL = 2

Favorite turf, sand based. Favorite grasses: fescue and bent. Favorite conditions: windy. Conditions I play my best golf in: wind and rain combination.

Cruden Bay (L)
Crystal Downs (P)
Cypress Point (O)
Fisher’s Island (O)
Kingston Heath (H)
Lahinch (L)
Merion (P)
Morfontaine (H)
National Golf Links of America (L)
Noordwijkse Golf Club (L)
North Berwick (L)
Oakmont (P)
Old Sandwich (H)
Pacific Dunes (L)
Pebble Beach (O)
Pine Valley (H)
Prestwick (L)
Royal Cinque Ports (L)
Royal County Down (L)
Sand Hills (LL)
Shinnecock Hills (L)
Sunningdale Old (H)
The Old Course St. Andrews (L)
Utrechtse de Pan (H)
Wolf Point (LL)

Criss, what did you think of The Quarry in Canton? I've played it a few times and have enjoyed it. Although not my ideal course because of the difficulty of walking, it does have some wild land movement and several interesting holes.

I thought on the whole it was quite good, but there are a couple dud holes keeping it from being my favorite Ohio public. Also, it's pretty unrealistic to walk, which drops it slightly in my book.

I'd like to get another viewing of hole 13 and see if my (bad) opinion of it changes. That's the one where you have a downhill lie to a green that rises by at least 30-40 feet. I'm not sure how slower swing speed golfers finish that hole by the rules of golf. I guess you could call me a hypocrite because I really like 15 at Canterbury, and it has similar characteristics, although 13 at The Quarry is a longer hole with a narrower fairway.

The par 5 15th, on the other hand, may be one of the best par 5's I've played IMO. Great land movement, and all scores from 3 upwards are possible.

High praise for T&C among those courses...thank's Criss.

I very well could be skewing it higher because of my Mashie win. But I'd like to think that it meshed well with my like of older courses with good quirk. One of the more interesting places I've played for sure.
