Most difficult stretch of three holes, par 3, 4 and 5 ?
« on: December 15, 2009, 07:31:21 PM »
Piggybacking on Jeff's thread, what's the most difficult stretch of three holes where there's a par 3, par 4 and par 5 and all three holes, individually and collectively are difficult ?

Pine Valley's 13th, 14th and 15th would be very high on my list.

Boca Rio's 16th, 17th and 18th

Pine Tree's 5th, 6th and 7th

Baltusrol Lower's 15th, 16th and 17th

NGLA 6th, 7th and 8th ?

Shinnecock' 16th, 17th and 18th ?  And 5th, 6th and 7th ?

Merion 3, 4, 5, especially from the new back tee boxes and the moving fairway on 4...

Do you really think the 7th at National is that hard?

Carnoustie 16-18 is certainly among the hardest.

Canterbury's last three holes are both long and difficult.

Bill, Carnoustie's 16-18th don't include a par 5, though perhaps you only mentioned it because you are campaigning for an adjustment being made to 18 on the scorecard :)

With competitive hole locations, yes.

The hole plays into a prevailing wind, and tee shots hit right usually end up with bogey or worse.
Shots hit into the greenside road bunker often don't find their way out and shots hit long into the deep back bunker have their own set of probems to contend with.

If the tee was placed further back on an existing footpad/berm, the "Road Hole Hotel Bunkers" would come back into play off the tee, making the hole play as intended, and more difficult.

I'd rate NSW 16-18 as being more difficult than 5-7

Others from Australia:
National Moonah 15-17
The Australian 14-16

GB&I
Murfield 16-18
Royal Troon 16-18
Woodhall Spa 7-9

In the USA I would have to say:
TPC Sawgrass 16-18
Winged Foot 3-5
Pine Valley 13-15

Kevin,

Muirfield 16-18 sprung to my mind but I wouldn't really call 17 a difficult hole.  In fact I wonder if 4-6 isn't a harder stretch?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Crystal Downs 8, 9, 10.  (I know its 5, 3, 4, but still)
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Can I suggest holes 4 (par 4), 5 (par 5) and 6 (par 3) at Silloth of the back tees. On the 5th hole alone even the pro's struggle to make the fairway.

Niall,

That's a really good set, though for 5 to be a real monster the wind will be helping on 4, won't it?

If the wind is up, #15-17, or #16-18 (take your pick) at Sand Hills.

It would but thats the beauty of the 4th, even with a half wedge for the second you have to allow for a running shot and its easy to go off the sides and then you're struggling to get bogey. Also if you do hit the green its easily the hardest green at Silloth to read, IMO, even if it doesn't have the biggest borrows.

The 6th mind you is an easy par 3 of 200 yards generally with the wind in the face and across. No problem there then !

Scott,

With the prevailing wind, do those holes play downwind ?

A lot of good choices have been named

16,17 and 18 from the tips at Gallaway National are pretty strong -  16 being the easiest of the 3

Pat,

I am certainly no expert on Sand Hills, but from what I've heard there is no prevailing wind in those parts.  I've had rounds where those holes played into a slight breeze and I've had rounds where they played downwind.

With the nature of #17, I'm not sure if downwind wouldn't be a more difficult scenario than into the wind, especially if the wind was up.

Not very long but when the wind is blowing 6,7 and 8 at Pebble Beach can be very challenging.  when its relatively calm, the first 2 aren't bad.  Further evidence of the importance of wind in determining the golf to be played on a given day.
