I thought stimulus money for golf courses was not allowed?
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

Kyle,

Things can get really messy very quickly.  I wonder if Sharp Park and other places like Yale would operate in the black if they were allowed to act as an enterprise by hiring in the open market instead of acting as social agencies for the city's bureaucracy.

But if it is okay to give an Oklahoma State U. professor a few hundred thousand dollars to study Alaskan Eskimo marital practices (or something like that), what is wrong with SP getting a new irrigation system?  It is not like it doesn't need it (Google broken window fallacy), and it is not like the money is not going to be spent otherwise.

Lynn,

They built golf courses with public money during the Great Depression.  The boys can do pretty much what they want.  Afterall, they are looking out for the public good and intentions are all that count.  The politicos might have positioned the project better by framing it around Endangered Species Habitat Restoration, with the irrigation project being the first step not to benefit the golfers, but in better contolling the flow of sufficiently clean water into this essential, fragile micro-environment.  I suspect that had they packaged the grant request in this manner, with three or four contingent phases, that the funding could be several fold larger and ongoing 'till the cows (frogs or fishies) come home.

Lou,

I don't think this isn't anything you and I cant figure out on the golf course ;) :)
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

I am familiar with the laws of entropy, my friend.
Thank you for sharing your perspective. I agree with some of what you say and as always, I can appreciate your well-reasoned and articulated arguments, even when the conclusions drawn conflict with my own.

...but I am only passing this article along. No voiced opinions here just yet  ;)

JC,

We pretty much settled all questions relating to TARP, government motors, and contract law in what, 10 minutes?

Put us up at Seminole for a few hours and we can probably resolve socialized healthcare and throw-in the capture of bin Laden as a freebie.  And who said these were complex issues!  ;)

Kyle,

I am not here to win hearts or minds, but mostly to amuse (mainly myself).  You lefties are so much fun particularly when you get mad (but in your case, only when we're 1500 miles apart).

Lou,

The lefty/righty schtick is getting a bit old.

Both parties pull the same old tricks...the only thing that changes is which side is doing the accusing at any given point in time.

Don't get me wrong though, I don't think Taxpayer money should be spent on golf-related stuff at the monent, we have much larger fish to fry.

I'm not a lefty in every category. On some issues, I'm fairly conservative, though perhaps still a bit left of you in the overall continuum. In most issues, I find there are more than two perspectives.

I suppose that makes me more of an "upper" or a "downer," at least until a 3rd metaphorical dimension is considered.

Move back to Cali so we can play more golf. Than we'll see who gets angry. 8)

Cheers, Compatriot.

Where did Lou say anything about this being a lefty/righty thing in his original post? He did jab Kyle later, but I believe his main criticism is against government largesse.

The reason Coburn was so outspoken on this is because he is so invested in his amendment to the economic stimulus legislation:

Senator Tom Coburn introduced (and the Senate gave 73–24 approval to) an amendment (Senate Amendment 309 to HR 1 and S. Amdt 98) that would prohibit the use of stimulus package money for any "casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project."
Source - http://madvilletimes.blogspot.com/2009/02/coburn-amendment-arts-get-no-stimulus.html

I think he had to re-introduce this about 3 times before the amendment was finally passed.  Basically it kills any funding for the arts and community facilities of most sorts.

By the way, the third metaphorical dimension would cosist of "ins" and "outs," so I save that discussion for the various Tiger gossip threads.

Kalen,

Man, give me a freakin' break!  First, like you with several of your buddies, I am just having fun.  Second, unlike you, these back-and-forths are not my stlye- my attention span is just too short.

Kyle,

There are typically a number of perspectives on any topic.  But once you distill them, they typically come down to the individual vs. the collective.  I could care less how a group of like-minded people organize themselves into a collective to pursue their interests as long as they don't then drag me into it against my will.

I am back in Texas in no small part because of how the folks in your wonderful state have decided to be governed.  My biggest fear with Democrats in general and President's Obama type in particular is their incremental, continuous, to-the-death attempt to Californicate the country.  All this current spending, the upcoming Cap & Tax and/or EPA's current finding of CO2 as a pollutant (enabling it to bypass Congress and impose carbon restrictions under its own authority), socialized healthcare is all part of it.

There was a very good reason why the Constitution was written the way it was, why we sat out as a republic with a federalist system, and why a major departure from the restrictions it placed on the federal government were made relatively difficult (the amendment process).  If every state is like CA and NY- broke and hyper-expensive- where are people like me to go?  I know that the collectivists could care less so long as we keep making our tax payments and quit whinning about it.

Right Kalen?  Oh, one more thing, both parties are hardly the same.  Both may be bad about many things, but hardly equivalent.  We are too often put in the situation of choosing between the lesser of two evils with the full knowledge that either way we go, we are just forestalling disaster.  The time is getting short.

And now back to having fun.  ;)

I don't think this is a golf related issue.   Its a water conservation issue which is a hot issue in the state if not the country and its eligable for stimulus money.  The golf course is meerly the dumping point for the treated water.

Nearby Olympic, San Francisco GC and Lake Merced have been on the treated water system for almost 10 years now.
