GCA Thanks
« on: November 25, 2009, 11:34:48 AM »
At this time of year, I'd like to extend my thanks to three GCA participants:

--to Randy Thompson, for his offers to let me tag along and check out some of his work in Argentina, and for his hospitality with respect to Carmelo;

--to Tom Huckaby, for putting me in contact with his cousin, who's a member at Castlerock and with whom we got to play in a fun members' event; and

--to Ari Techner, for putting up with my various questions about ways to help my (terrible) wedge game -- his wedges are terrific.

Happy Thanksgiving to you guys and everyone else on GCA.

Carl

To Ran and Ben...after that, well, if I had to list everyone, the post would be longer than the entire board, contrary to usage:)

Tom Doak,  being a part of the Renaissance Cup was one of the great highlights of my golfing life.  It was a thrill to be surrounded by so many people who love the game and appreciate playing great golf courses.  Best wishes to you and your family.

Thanks to Mac Plumart, for restoring my faith in the wonder of the new;

To Carl and Roger, for their hospitality at Carolina GC along Charlotte's mean streets;

To Scott Witter (whose hand I've shaken) and Ian Andrew (whose hand I have not), my favorite architects on GCA;

To WG and MK...I know who they are, they know who they are, and they know how much I revere them;

To Kevin Lynch, the greatest living lover of golf courses NOT on GCA;

To Bob Huntley and all the guys who for some reason want to speak to me on the phone and widen my fairways even more;

To all the guys who participated in the fantasy draft...what a love-making blast!!

BTDubs, I'm most thankful to my dead relatives, who saw fit to hold me at a green light this evening, not proceed through, and not get hit by the SOB who ran the light a good four seconds after it turned...instead of being t-boned and eliminated, I'm typing this post.  What a world we live in.

What a timely thread...

Big thanks to Bill McBride for a great round at Pensacola Country Club this week. Very much enjoyed the course and the company! Can't wait to do it again.
Did you know World Woods has the best burger I've ever had in my entire life? I'm planning a trip back just for another one between rounds.

To Ran Morrissette for creating a site that allows completely differing views from its contributors without ending in mayhem

To Gene Greco for introducing us to Sand Hills.

To Dan Taylor for letting me find that Fishers Island is in my top five courses that I want to play until I croak.

To Mike Sweeney for being my personal chaffeur in New York and guiding me to Yale.

To Tom Huckaby who is the cheeriest human being on the planet and can be my guest anywhere at anytime.

To Tom Paul. he of the fastest fingers on a word processor in the world and an elegant swing, a teller of louche tales and a love of the turf.

To Pat Mucci as tough as they come with more grit than most of us see in a lifetime and a game to die for. He has to get rid of the green ink.

To Peter Pittock for introducing me to the wines of Oregon.

To Peter Herried for the fantastical tale of the White Rabbit at Pebble Beach.

And to dozens more who I can bring up later.

Bob

I would dearly love to thank:

-David Tepper, Mark Pearce, Ally Matheson, and FBD for playing direct roles in the trip of a lifetime, along with everybody that shared their wisdom during the planning phases and those that I couldn’t manage to meet just yet.

-Jim Colton for a Terrizzelific gathering of like-minded compatriots in golfing nirvana.

-Time Leahy for inviting me to embarass myself on camera.

-Michael Robin, Bob Huntley, and Jon Spaulding for their continual generosity to citizens of the tree house.

-David Stamm, Robert Ball, Peter Wagner, Mark Chaplin, Sean Arble, Michael Whitaker and everyone else that contributed to GCA events held in the past or coming in the future.

-All that share their knowledge and insight via this forum with humility and charm.

-Ran Morrissett and Ben Cowan-Dewar for continuing to host and guide this rollercoaster ride.

Happy TD everybody! :D

The guys I want to thank most are those that organize events - especially Whitty, who seems to have become Mr Dixie.  I know I rarely attend these events, but it is heartwarming to know I am welcome.  Ace McBride is right, once you meet folks its much harder to be surly with them because to a man they are all good chaps with more or less shared feelings about the great game of golf.

I would also like to thank those that invite me to their clubs irrespective of whether I take them up on the offer.  It is especially wonderful when an invite comes out of the blue and I think it is a mistake!  Seriously, playing with members or folks who really know places well makes all the difference.

I am very grateful to those who post course profiles.  The photos and comments are the bread and butter of the site so far as I am concerned and really help me plan future trips and days out.

Finally, thanks to Ran and Ben whose efforts make all this possible.  I don't know a lot about chat forums, but GolfClubAtlas has to be unique in what it accomplishes.

Ciao

Surely I am missing out on others and I apologize for that but GCA is a great community which I am glad to be a part of.

I'm thankful for being a member of the site and finding a community of people who appreciate the golf course as much as I do.

I think many of the people on this site fit the stereotypical definition of a golfer, which centers around being classy gentlemen.  Thanks for giving me a sense of welcome right from the very beginning.

I won't single out any one person to thank as that list would simply be too long.  But many of you have left a lasting impression on me that I will never forget.

THANKS!!

To Jeff Tang and Jim Tang, my bestest golfing buddies for life. Thanks for the camraderie and the competition.

To Brad Fleischer, for a memorable weekend of golf in Northern Mich.

To Wyatt Halliday, Tim Bert, Ben Sims, Mike Wagner, Matt Schulte, Kyle H and others friendships that have been forged this year.  See you in 2010 if not sooner.

Not GCA, but thanks to my grandparents Glenn and Corinne Colton, who are the primary reasons I play and love this great game.

To Jim Colton for letting me tag along in June and then planning an entire golf weekend around my work plans in September.  All this from a guy I didn't know 6 months ago. Oh - and a hearty public thanks for the addiction to The Wire.

To Bob Huntley for being a being gracious enough to speak to me after a second straight year of almost hitting him in the head with a golf ball.

To Jason McOlgan and Alan Gard who I suppose you could call my Tang brothers.

To Jim Urbina for allowing us to pelt him with question after question and answering every one of them.

To John Mayhugh and Eric Smith for sticking around so I could make "the shot."

To Jordan Wall for hanging out with Jason Kidd and me at the 7th green / 8th tee at Pebble Beach.

I don't dare try to thank everyone from GCA that has been so good to me.

Hopefully it's enough to say how thankful I am for Ran creating this site and providing the opportunity to meet so many great people.  I'm also especially thankful for those that have worked to arrange all of the GCA outings.  As a result of their generosity, my golf life will never be the same.
