What's with Rye's logo

I bought a sweater there and ever since people have been asking me "what is that coming out of that lion's ass?".

It's derived from the coat of arms of the Cinque Ports, depicting a lion and a ship's stern. Although the coat of arms of each port look similar by having the heads of three lions on the left joined to the sterns of the ancient ships on the right, each can be identified by subtle changes of design.

This is the flag of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports:

What were the cinque ports? (from http://www.battle1066.com)
Five ports on the Kent/Sussex coast. named from the French word "cinque" meaning five. The Cinque Ports were part of England's defences from the 11th century to at least the 15th. The purpose of such ports were for the production of warships for the country. The ships produced were constructed for the state and their makers were given consideration when paying tallage or ship tax. The ports were under the charge of a warden, known as the Warden of the Cinque Ports. Although the significance of the cinque ports is no longer, the title of Warden still exists on a purely honoury basis.

Located along the southern coast of England, the initial ports were Dover, Sandwich, Romney, Hythe and Hastings. These original five Cinque Ports indicated in red were known as the Head Ports. They were later joined by others such as those shown in blue, for example - Located and Rye which were known as Antient Ports. Even though they were officially acknowledged as Cinque ports from the 11th century, their history dates back to the time of Alfred the Great whose ship building program, some may consider to be the forerunner of the Royal Navy. As time went by, the number of cinque ports expanded to over thirty which would have included just about every south eastern coastal ship building village.

Royal Cinque Ports' logo is quite similar.

Splosh! One of the finest sights in the world: the other man's ball dropping in the water - preferably so that he can see it but cannot quite reach it and has therefore to leave it there, thus rendering himself so mad that he loses the next hole as well.

No kidding.  I bought a sweater too and wondered about the logo, but it's been too warm down here to wear it just yet so I hadn't gotten any questions.

I hasn't planned to buy anything, but when Chaplin and I played there the week after Buda, we arrived to find the rain shitting it down sideways in 50kts of wind, so my umbrella was going to be about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike, and to that point I had stubbornly refused to buy waterproofs... so I know own a "lion with a ship coming out of its arse" rain jacket!

I like the way "Cinque Ports" is pronounced, "Sink ports."  Apparently the queen was asked, do we pronounce this "Sank" like the French for five? and the queen said, "Hell no, 'Sink Ports' like we British say it."   And so it remains, "Sink Ports."

I wonder how all the ocean between the current coastline and the fortified town of Rye came to be filled in.

Rye - Littlestone (New Romney) - Deal - Princes - Sandwich.........that's a wonderful stretch of links courses, can't wait to return.

Scott et al, thanks for the history lesson.

Scott & others

Thanks for the information.  I bought a shirt and a ball marker at RCP but to date no one has asked me any questions about the logos!

I thought that was a great stretch of coastline for golf and I really liked Rye as a quaint town, almost like a mini York or Chester.  So much so that my wife & I have booked a cottage for a week next July, staying just outside Rye.  I'm still negotiating as to whether the golf clubs will be travelling with us ;)
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

If you're taking bets I'll say yes!

It's almost too bad the Deal golf course is so far from Rye.  I think Craig Disher stays in Rye and plays at Littlestone when they are over in England each year.

Bill,

You asked "I wonder how all the ocean between the current coastline and the fortified town of Rye came to be filled in."

It just silted up over the centuries.  I don't know exactly why it happens in some ports and not others, but I remember watching flat racing in Chester on what--centuries ago--had been the harbor.

Some days you play golf, some days you find things.

I'm not really registered, but I couldn't find a symbol for certifiable.

Andrew - You'll be my guest at Deal so make sure those clubs travel!

Bill - Can't imagine "hell no" ever passed the lips of the late Queen Mother. We still have the letter but I recall it started something like "whilst not wishing to be considered the expert"

The Crown above the Deal logo signifies the Royal status.

Guys

Thanks for your comments.

Melvyn - whether clubs travel or not there will certainly be far more non golf days than golf days (probably a ratio of 6:1) so thanks for the tips.

Bill - I wouldn't be too certain.  It's not a given ;)

John - the parking in Rye is challenging.  That's why we booked a cottage just outside (just past the golf club ;D).  When I stayed there pre BUDA I was lucky I got a spot outside the B&B late evening outside of the parking restrictions and made sure I moved it first thing the following morning.  Bill McBride and Joe Buhler were not so lucky.  Bill did you ever pay the fine or will the Police be waiting for you next time you land in the UK?

Mark - sent you an IM

The police sent it to the kind people at EuropeCar who in turn charged my American Express card afrer adding 50% surcharge.  I'm afraid to see what the final cost is.   My question:  Do you think Joe will split it with me?

That's what I thought.   :'(
