If you are traveling from DC/Baltimore to Richmond, VA... head down Rte 301 and stop at Swan Point Yacht & Country Club.  Its a great Bob Cupp design on the banks of the Potomac.

If you liked Big Sky, you will also enjoy Ghost Creek at Pumpkin Ridge. They are pretty much exactly the same courses, though I prefer Ghost Creek because it has a bit more variety.

The best Cupp course I have played is Crosswater.

Hopefully going to squeeze that in next time we go to Bandon.

Ryan - Just play another round in Bandon instead of stopping by GC! :)

Let me know if you are ever in town - Ghost is where I play.

Just like to see a variety of courses when I'm out and about, my minds already made up that Bandons an annual trip at the very least, and me and my fiance both really love Oregon in general

Oregon is as close to Canada as you will get in the States!  ;D

There is some good golf in Bend as well - Cupp's Crosswater, Tetherow, Juniper, Pronghorn - beyond Ghost there are a few decent public tracks around Portland but not many.

We were in Bend a few years ago and really enjoyed it, I've only played Rivers Edge there, it was ok, nothing special, how did you end up in Oregon?

Pumpkin Ridge is very good.  It may not fit the criteria for greatness by many on this site, but I have played both Witch Hollow and Ghost Creek 50x+ and they are great tests of golf.  Pumpkin Ridge has hosted the Nike Tour Championship, US Amateur and the Women's US Open.  They were also scheduled to host the Senior US Open until Jeld-Wen bought the sponsorship and made the Tour move the event from Scottsdale to Portland.  Go play Witch Hollow from the tips and let me know if you came close to your index #.  Alot of subtle challenge by Bob Cupp like the creek on #3, the angle of the green on #5, #6 is a great par 4, the green on 8, etc.  I must say though #18 is an interesting hole but not one of my favorites.
2024 Line Up: Spanish Oaks GC, Cal Club, Cherokee Plantation, Huntercombe, West Sussex, Hankley Common, Royal St. Georges, Sunningdale New & Old, CC of the Rockies, Royal Lytham, Royal Birkdale, Formby, Royal Liverpool, Swinley Forest, St. George's Hill, Berkshire Red, Walton Heath Old, Austin GC,

Ryan - I met my wife in NYC and she is from Vancouver, Warshington so we moved back to PDX - it is a fantastic place to live (a little more topography than TO).

I agree with John - both Ghost and Witch are solid tests of golf. I thoroughly enjoyed Witch my one time around - it has some fun holes. I have played Ghost 40+ times this year and still enjoy it.

One thing I like about Witch and Ghost vs a lot of other tracks in Portland is the general room off the tee on most hills and generally more strategic vs penal challenges. There are also fewer trees in general and more room for recovery because you don't play through tunnels.

Almost every person on their way to Bandon who I have played with at Ghost will remark at how beautiful the course and setting is - which is true - the views out to the coastal range in the late afternoon are spectacular.

Cupp's first work in Oregon was a remodel of Tualatin CC, with John Fought as project manager. That was followed by Crosswater, Ghost Creek and Witch Hollow. Last was Reserve Vineyards (North). As a protege of Nicklaus you can see a lot of design similarities.
I play at Reserve Vineyards, and prefer the Cupp course to the Fought course.
