NB oneof the sellers "including an possibly the earliest example of Colt's writing; an essay on the handicapping system, as perceptive and accurate today as when it was first written. Colt was drawing off his experiences as secretary of Sunningdale. He describes club secretaries as ' invariably a highly paid official with next to nothing to do.'"  NO wonder he was keen on being a Club Secretary.

Thanks for resusitating the thread on the Swinley book.  I think I'll buy this when I'm down.  Does Swinley have anything as vulgar as a professional's shop?

I'm happy to contribute to your book on "1001 things to do in London before watching QPR v Watford".  One of them might be to read the published works of Mills & Boon.  I've never been one for soppy romances but the 6 handicapper guide may prove relief from all those heaving bosoms ;)

Going slightly stir crazy here.  No golf since mid December (what's the fun in being Captain of a golf club that's closed?), and too many clients unaware of the impending tax return filing deadline. Swinley can't come fast enough!

Swinley does have a good pro shop and their logo'd shirts are excellent.

I think a better fantasy read would be "My handicap" by Giles Payne or "Australian Ashes Victories 2008-" by Scott Warren
or "Getting (most of the way) to Deal" by Tony Muldoon.

I have to say that I admire you for having the nerve to post that.  I've played enough golf with Giles to know that whilst his on days are very good, the prospect of real competition (not Australian pseudo-competition) can reduce him to a mere hacker.  His handicap bears at least some relation to reality, unlike certain others round here!

The jumpers are nice at Swinley too.

Both the Pro (Stuart) and assistant pro (Ben) are very helpful too.

A suggestion based on my golf society days for around 24 players

Format – Stapleford (Medal format will make the round longer and more no returns)
Prizes for 1st 2nd and 3rd in the morning 18 hole comp
Prizes for 1st 2nd and 3rd in the afternoon 18 hole comp
One prize for the overall winner for 36 holes
Silent partners prizes (best overall combined score wins) – partners are drawn out of a hat etc
Longest drive – morning and afternoon
Nearest to the pin – morning and afternoon

Format - Stableford for speed

Prizes - £5pp, morning only, winner gets entry refunded, 50% for runner up. Remainder for team prize all 3 points totals to count.

Are "Long Drive" and "Closest to the Pin" an American phenomenon?

I don't recall ever seeing either during the "Open Week" events that I have played in Ireland - and never really thought about it until seeing Ben's comment.

Lot's of Stableford over there though - a great competition format. Nice call.

How about 18 hole individual stableford in the morning,

followed by a good lunch,

followed by afternoon team competition, if three man team then two scores to count on each hole, stableford format.

If we're having a formal lunch I'm not too bothered about another individual stableford in the afternoon.  A team competition should be rather more convivial!

An Am-Am should be quicker in the afternoon, which will help the last groups if they are fighting against the light.

I reckon a Bowmaker (best 2 of 3 Stableford) is the way to go.  You may also want to consider a gross or net skins game (with all the players) as an extra for say a fiver a man.  With 30 guys there shouldn't be that many skin winners.

18 hole individual, followed by 'posh' lunch and then a team am-am/'bowmaker' event in the afternoon sounds great (to burn off the calories!!! and having a closer analysis of Swinley)

According to http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/astronomy.html?n=136&month=2&year=2010&obj=sun&afl=-13&day=1 sunset is at 17:13 and it gets dark at 17:52.

That means it's feasible assuming we don't hang around at lunch (let's hope we're not following some bankers a la Sandwich!) and we don't hang around.

Man, 8:15 tee time with darkness at 5:30 suggests to me that many guys won't finish the afternoon game.  Guys will do well to be sitting down for lunch at 12:30.  That means the first group goes out at 1ish if they REALLY hussle.  With this in mind, perhaps a double Bowmaker should be the order of the day.

I'd like to think that 3-balls round Swinley shouldn't take much more than 3 1/4 hours playing Stableford.  The first group should be lunching around 12 Ithink.

If were voting, I'm not all that fussed about a competition and prizes. I'm coming along to enjoy the course and the company, a simple stableford is easy enough to follow, but when people start talking about antes and bits and... my eyes just glaze over.

I am keen to make lunch a brief affair and get back on the course as quickly as possible.
