Swinley Forest - February 16th 2010
« on: November 19, 2009, 11:06:51 AM »
Gents,

I have a day booked at Swinley Forest for Tuesday 16th February 2010 with another UK golf forum, but wanted to offer it open to fellow GCA members too.

The outline format for the day is as follows;

*7.30am - Arrival with coffee/bacon rolls

*8.15am - First tee time - 18 holes on HS Colt's "least bad course.."

*Full carvery lunch (with collar and tie required for this)

*PM - open use (we will probably be the only players on the day) of the course until darkness falls at around 5.15pm - we managed a second 18 holes easily last year at the same time.

Cost for this entire day per person is £69.57 (+VAT - which will be 17.5% by then) and I will be collecting deposits of £31.75 (leaving a round £50.00 balance payable on the day) to secure places. We will have up to (approx) 24 places for the day and it is possible to play just in the morning, or afternoon, if that suited as well.

Those GCA members who have already expressed an interest are;

*Sean Arble (PM only)
*Tony Muldoon
*Mark Pearce

Please add you name to this thread if you would like to come and I will PM you the deposit details (I have already paid a £300.00 deposit for the day)

Thanks,
Gareth

Splosh! One of the finest sights in the world: the other man's ball dropping in the water - preferably so that he can see it but cannot quite reach it and has therefore to leave it there, thus rendering himself so mad that he loses the next hole as well.

I played Swinley for the first time this past spring. I would absolutely jump on this were I in the UK ... it really is a fine course with some exceptional holes.

Gareth - I would be keen for this. Not played Swinley in ages. I also need to get as much practice in as possible as I'm off to California a couple of weeks after that!

Gareth and your gang!

I am very jealous and would love to join you, but living on the west coast of North America makes that impossible. John Mayhugh and I were fortunate to play Swinley in September just before the Buda Cup and it was indeed a very special experience. Driving down the narrow road to the gate, the cozy clubhouse and the pleasure of meeting the resident professional, Stuart Hill, and everything about the place is so pleasant. John and I each bought a copy of the club history, entitled ""The Swinley Special", which can be purchased in the bar. It is probably the best club history I have ever read and is most entertaining. Swinley's membership is very different than any other I have run across, full of characters, and they contribute to a great read. Buy a copy. You guys will have a gas!

Wow, is that ever a great deal.  Bob & I had to settle for sandwiches (that were quite good!).  All day golf and a proper lunch for around GBP 80 is almost too hard for me to resist. Lucky guys.

No problem Andrew.

To be honest (and based on the initial interest) we already have well over the minimum requirement of 24 players for this day. If the numbers from both forums (here at GCA and over at "Modsquadgolf") get too high I/we may have to look at two days in February at Swinley Forest.

I know from talking to them yesterday that wouldn't be a problem so I will let everyone know in the next 2 weeks if that is a viable option.

For now please keep the same date in mind (16/02/10) and I will let you know ASAP if there is second date required. If it was required we could easily manage a day at Swinley for each of the two respective forums perhaps.

Regards,
Gareth

Beyond jealous - have a fantastic time lads.

Please post photos and a report on the fun time that was had by all - SF definitely falls into the "dream golf" category.

Gareth,

I don't appear to have your PM with deposit details.  In fact, I don't recall receiving it.  Can you resend?

Hi Ally,

I will keep you all posted with regard to the numbers/availability here.

If the numbers get too high (say over 28) there will be the option to have a second, smaller group for another day in February but as yet that is an option I won't know about until early 2010.

Regards,
Gareth

Gareth,

Any news on this?  I note that Watford Football Club are playing QPR at Loftus Road that evening so I could combine 36 holes at Swinley Forest with watching the Golden Boys in action.  What better way to spend a day trip to the smoke?

Does anyone have an opinion on the following book:

Swinley Special
Swinley Forest Golf Club
by Nicholas Courtney

Yes, I do.

Bought a copy last year and it is pretty much the authorative work on Swinley Forest Golf Club!
