Chambers Bay Hole 3
« on: November 18, 2009, 02:44:32 PM »

  Par 3   165-92   Handicap 17  Redan

Difficult target. One of the smallest greens on the course. Green slopes more than most Redans. Backstop for the long miss. Mound on right has a very steep slope. A ball that misses right is a dificult up and down.

I like this hole but I think it would have been better had the tee been lowered significantly to create a slightly uphill tee shot.

Aidan,

Thanks so much for posting another one of your fabulous pics! When I saw Anthony's pics I was wishing he had shown the tee on No. 3 which I think is one of the most imaginative tees I have ever seen. Yours made it clear. There are so many tee options on that hole which can significantly affect your tee shot over many days. Not just angles, but distance, strategy (ie. to bump it in or to carry to the green) and pin position make it extremely interesting. I have played Chambers 3 times and the hole seemed so different each time!

I thought redan par threes were usually long iron shots. Is this hole into the wind?

Although I may be "mis-remembering", Jay Blasi seemed to go to great lengths to discourage folks from calling, considering or inferring that this is a Redan hole...Good enough by him, good enough by me...

From the new very back tee, the hole should play in the 215-230 range,(otherwise the tees range from 130-160 generally) but wind is not generally a major factor on this hole anyway.  Occasionally the prevailing southwest wind (from behind and left of the tee complex) will float balls a bit short right...

How wide is the putting surface and is there room behind the green for recovery shots ?

The putting surface is pretty wide. It is about 10~12 yards in the front and about 20 yards wide in the middle. There is a runoff area in the back, but the bunker goes all the way down the left side and wraps around a little.

The key here is to make sure you aim right. The sideboard there will feed the ball back to the green. There is a big ridge that runs along the middle of the green that determines how difficult of a putt you will have.

You definitely don't want to miss short here. It is pretty nasty in the front.

Peter,

Is the new back tee where Aidans' pic is taken?

Hard to imagine this hole playing at 215.

I think he's a bit right, or east, of the new tee, but not by much...

The green is too small for anything more tan a 6-iron.
