"Was it George Bernard Shaw or someone who said that the US and England were two countries separated by the same language?"

Winston Churchill or George Bernard Shaw, Kyle----what's the difference?  ;)

I think the quote about being two countries divided by a common tongue rightly belongs to Churchill.  But in pairing the two this story, perhaps apocryphal, but amusing nevertheless leapt to mind.

Shaw, reportedly sent two tickets for his newest play to Churchill with the message, "These are for the opening night of my play, bring a friend, if you have one."

Churchill returned the tickets with the message, "Prior commitment makes it impossible to attend, pray provide two ticket for the second night, if there is one."

Some days you play golf, some days you find things.

I'm not really registered, but I couldn't find a symbol for certifiable.

If I remember correctly, "Number one with a bullet" meant that a song premiered on the charts in the N° 1 position.

This is truly a rubbish thread. Let's delete it.

reminds me of another hopefully true Churchill story when a lasy told him "If i were your wife i would poison your drink"...he replied "If I were your husband i would drink it!"

As long as we're sharing Churchill quotes, there are two that seem appropriate for our discussion group:

A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject.

Never hold discussions with the monkey when the organ grinder is in the room.

Thank you but you are wrong, I must agree with Paul and Pat. Old Tom has nothing to do with it, he never has, but only in the minds of others.

If I am to be judged, I should only be judge on my own merits and not being related to anyone.

Clearly, it can be seen that my opinions count for little on GCA.com. Which does not create a problem for me, as they are still my opinions.

We are who we are, but not a soul on GCA.com knows me, let alone seems to understand or want to understand. I also find some of the comments rather unfair but then that’s life.

Moreover, no I am not leaving

Melvyn, you may not believe this, but I believe Tim's initial comment that has generated a 32 post thread was meant to be complimentary.  "...with a bullet" signaled a rising prospect.

And I for one am glad you are not leaving.  We need a traditionalist reminding us what tradition in golf is worth.

For the record, I have e-mailed Tim and told him that no apology is required as I now understand his comment.

Melvyn

Adrian, I have decided the only way to counter your comments is to visit one of your sites and make my own comment on your work, trust you have a few in the UK. I presume that is what you mean by rev up. If nothing else, it will be a useful exercise and it will be interesting if others take any notice of my opinions. Who knows I might even like what I find, lucky I have an open mind  or do I ?

  Paul,

Put yourself in his shoes. What views Do you expect him to have? It comes as no surprise that A decendant of OTM would have such deep  attitudes about carts and players poor behavior. Why are others offended? Only a virgion would be offended if you told them they needed laid. Or a monkey by an organ grinder.

Melvyn:

Surely by now you can see the meaning of what Tim meant.  He has gone even further to explain his meaning for using the term.  Tim is a gentleman of the highest order as others above have also commented.

If you haven't already sent him an apology for the overeaction, please do so now or post it on this thread and be done with it.  He clearly meant no harm and you are smart enough to realize this.

It is unfortunate that there is such a disconnect with what you say and what you mean on the internet.

My best to you,

Eric

Edit: I see now you have emailed Tim while I was typing, good man.

I really do hope you are joking.

I posted two Winston Churchill quotes, explicitly stating that "there are two that seem appropriate for our discussion group."  Please read what I wrote.  I stated that the quotes seem appropriate for our discussion group.  That is a reference to Golf Club Atlas, not Melvyn specifically.  I'm sorry if Melvyn misunderstood and I'm sorry that you seem incapable of understanding.

What do you think this quote means? "Never hold discussions with the monkey when the organ grinder is in the room."   I can explain it if you would like, but here's a hint - it's not intended as an insult.

Let me try to clarify the matter.

You see, in the old days, newspapers and magazines published weekly charts ranking pop music hits, as decided by record sales.

There would be the artist, the name of the song, then a column for the number of weeks it had been on the chart.

When a new song debuted, it would be followed by a hyphen, or "bullet", since it was in its first week.

Thus, a recording would normally enter a Top 40 chart at number 36 or whatever, with a bullet.

A "Top Ten Hit with a Bullet" was a huge sensation, and a "Number 1 with a Bullet" was as rare as a double eagle, (just to give you some GCA relevance). Only the most anticipated releases by the biggest names would achieve that exalted status.

I hope that settles the argument.

the big wheel turns by the grace of God.

Anthony,
There were two quotes listed.  Both were commentary on the way the discussion group communicates.  You might have noticed that if you weren't looking for some sort of insult.

The first quotation "A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject" refers to our GCA group propensity to continually argue the same points without any interest at all in changing opinions.  I think it's fair to call Melvyn an anti-cart fanatic, but I didn't specifically do that. One could call a large number of other people on the site fanatics about various issues.  It's this type of fanatacism that leads to some contentious threads continuing for way too long.

The second quotation "Never hold discussions with the monkey when the organ grinder is in the room" refers to the pointlessness of trying to debate or discuss a topic when someone is not interested in what you have to say.  The use of the term "monkey" in this context does not describe a particular individual.  I'm pretty sure Melvyn understands this.  I'm sorry you do not.
