Dixie Cup 2010 Plans To Be Announced Soon

We need volunteers for the Dixie Cup 2010 planning committee.

We have had several suggestions for the 2010 venue... Mississippi, Tennessee, and Charlotte, NC.

Who would like to help pull the 2010 event together?

As JC says, I am also a man with no serious connections... except I know a guy in Houston, Texas who happens to be the proud archie of a very interesting course in Port Lavaca ,TX (within the definitional confines of "south of Mason-Dixie line)- has been an avid attendee of various KPs and DCs and the like,  and there is this other guy that helped build that amazing course that just happened to be at the last Dixie Cup, and this other guy who is a top super who just happened to be a super at this one course I was thinking about -and has been to past Dixies and KPs, and this one course that everyone and anyone I know around here is salivating to see (and a very few who actually have and rave about) and this course is so private and unique that if the owner could be persuaded, would be totally awesome to have a Dixie Cup event.... and I'm out of breath... you figure it out from here!  ;) ;D 8) :o

Dick,

As cool as the unmentioned course would be, I would never ask the very private owner or its generous creators to hold the DC.  Besides, it is a pretty hard place to get to.  On the other hand, I would not get bored at all playing four or five rounds there over a three day period.

While the tournament founders probably didn't contemplate Texas in the rotation, Jeff Brauer has five good courses fairly accessible using the DFW Airport as the tournament hub.  The three I would recommend Cowboys, TangleRidge, and Bridges range from pricey to cheap, and are sufficiently different to provide some variety.  Trails of Frisco and Ridgeview Ranch are the other two which might be possible as a substitute for Bridges which is a bit further north.

Though I can't volunteer Jeff's services, I suspect that he would help and so would I.

Yeah Lou, I guess there does appear to be a paucity of alternate venues outside of the target feature course in that area. But, I sure would like to see it with this gang of enthusiasts.  Somewhere inTexas seems like an interesting area to have a D.C.  And, it would be fun to feature another of our regular contributing archies as one of the venues.

If we do Dallas we should play Turtle Hill for fun!  I'm not a huge fan of the Palm Coast corses...but it was years ago I played them...

What about ATL?  There are tons of us in and around the area and it is probably one of the easiest places in the country to get to. In between 10 -12 people I could help set up about anywhere except Peachtree. The problem is that most of the "best" stuff is private so it would be pretty expensive. An average of over $120 per day for golf, if not per round. We could probably do some 36 hole days at some of the private clubs and most times the replay is free. Also a little more than 1 hr away is Cuscowilla.

Atlanta here also.  Member of a great private club (Pine Tree), would be happy to sponsor a group and help in any way if event were to come this way.

Someone should talk too the powers at Augusta National. Just think of the good PR they would get from hosting the Dixie Cup 8)

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

OK, here are the ideas that seem to be taking hold:

1) Mike Young has proposed that we visit Beau Pre' Country Club, a course he designed in Natchez, MS (http://www.beauprecc.com) coupled with The Bluffs in St. Francisville, LA (http://www.thebluffs.com) and a third course to be named later. This would definitely be a fun area of the Old South to visit.

2) Roger Wolfe and Ed Oden have offered to organize a Dixie Cup in the Charlotte area at Mimosa Hills (1928 Ross http://www.mimosahills.org), Carolina Golf Club (1929 Ross http://www.carolinagolfclub.org) and either Rock Barn (http://www.rockbarn.com) or Charlotte Golf Links, one of Doak/Urbina's early efforts (http://www.charlottegolflinks.com). Roger is the GM at Carolina Golf Club and Ed is a member there, so we'd have that going for us!

3) A good number folks have suggested a Black Creek (http://www.blackcreekclub.com), Lookout Mountain event in Tennessee (http://lookoutmountaingolfclub.com). Do we have any members of our group who could pull this together?

Dallas and Atlanta could be good venues as well, but I wonder about the cost of an event in those areas. One of the hallmarks of the Dixie Cup has been great bang for your buck and I hope we will always strive to make that a main ingredient of the package we put together.

Any thoughts on these potential venues?

Chatanooga/Knoxville would be great.....but do it earlier....too much chance with weather in nov....plus good food and spots to stay in chatanooga and knoxville.....

I agree that Chattanooga and Knoxville would be great (was born in K'ville and lived on Signal Mountain for 7 years.  We should be able to put together a great event in that area.

Too many trees, the bunker sand is too white, the course is too long without strategic merit, not enough brown, all that damn eye candy makes me wonder if it's a golf course or garden, maintenance is completely unrealistic and bad for golf, and the greens are tricked up so count me out.

I'm not offering to organize or plan anything but you could always come to Virginia and have it at Royal New Kent. Pair RNK up with another Williamsburg and Richmond course. There seems to be plenty of Strantz fans on the site so it would be a popular choice.

What about Tobacco Road in the Pinehurst area, also Tot Hill Farm is not too far away. Both fun Strantz courses. Throw in Pinehurst #2, kinda nice venue.
