I prefer the same method as the last draft, even though it takes longer.  It's going to be hard to get too many guys to commit over a holiday weekend to a 4-hour block that doesn't include actual golf!!

Ian,

I think it works for two reasons:

1)  By limiting what type of hole can be drafted per round, it brings some consistency to the process and gets everyone on the same page in each round and wondering which par 3 for example the other peeps are going to pick.

2)  Most importantly though, it mandates that everyone will have the same par at the end which will be a much smoother process when the inevitable, "judge the picks" and comparison trash talking starts.  Comparing a par 3 course to one with all par 5s means it will just be all over the map and not apples to apples!!   ;)

Just my opinion though...any format should be fun!  :)

I like Kalen's idea that each round should be for a certain par hole.  Let's please not make it Par 72 with 4 3's and 4 5's! How about Par 70 with only 2 par 5's?  Seems like when we did our personal best 18 there weren't that many memorable par 5's out there...

I still think the criteria should be limited somewhat, like a par between 69 and 73.  That gives the participants several options and mixes of holes - seems like most of us would land in that range anyway.

I also think the picks should happen at least two holes at once (I think I originally said three) and that the picks should come from the same course so you have to make a decision about whether you simply want the best hole remaining or if you want to go with the strongest pair where neither may represent the best hole.

Tim's idea is a good one (I like it w/ 3 better) because a) it'll speed up the draft for 6 rounds, a big plus if we get 20+ participants.  The last draft dragged on by the end. and b) it forces you to make some tough decisions in filling out holes 1-18, especially in the later rounds. You might decide to take a lesser hole on a course that you want in order the stronger holes in your routing.

I really like the auction idea, but that requires everybody to be in the same spot at the same time plus some level of technology to handle all of it.

I too like 6 rounds with 3 holes at once too...it'll make the draft go a fair bit quicker.

However I think one hole per person per course max is the way to go....if for no other reason to get people thinking about different courses and introduce more variety to the process.

3 holes sounds reasonable to me. We should note, however, that the more holes you do at once, the bigger the advantage for the higher picks.

Looks like I'm outnumbered on the restrictive aspect.

How about:
the first 2 rounds - 1 hole
next 2 rounds - 2 holes
next 4 rounds - 3 holes

I don't like this.  In a fantasy football draft, you determine which position you covet most.  I love par five holes, so i would tend to go after them first, at the expense of the others.  That's my strategy.  I believe that the restriction of par per round eliminates this strategic element.

This I like.  I don't know why I like it, much like lezbo granny porn, but I like it!

I think we have to have each round be a certain par hole so that we can compare courses/hole selections at the end...maybe we should make the first round par 4, second round par 3, and third round par 5 so everyone gets a crack at their favorites....

Well put, I agree completely. Also, if your favorite hole isn't all that well known, you might wait to pick it later in the draft, believing nobody else will take it.

I also like Jim's suggestion.
