However, there are many "claims" for different architects here that I would disagree with.  I wouldn't give Milwaukee CC to Colt -- it was really Alison -- and to my knowledge Mr. Colt never set foot on Woodhall Spa.

Tom:

I'm sure you're probably right. Again, I chose them because they were both listed in the Golf Magazine Top 100 rankings, World and U.S, as Colt courses.  The commish laid it out at the beginning, if the architect is named on these lists, they're in.

Woodhall Spa
Harry Vardon, 1905
H.S. Colt, 1912

Milwaukee
H. S. Colt, C. H. Alison, 1929

I know that we are all pretty spent after this exercise.  I think we agreed amid the building exhaustion to assemble our picks in this fashion after so here goes.  I don't imagine there is one of us that will sit back, look at his picks, and sigh in disappointment.  We were given terrific options all the way through and came up with tremendous 24-packs of golf courses.  Nicely done to all involved.  In a few minutes, I'll post my suggestion for our next fantasy draft, to be undertaken at a later date.

Stiff Shaft Long Hosel
Round 1
7th Pick...Perry Maxwell - Old Town Club, Southern Hills and Prairie Dunes
Round 2
24th Pick...Walter Travis - Yahnundasis, Ekwanok, Lookout Point
Round 3
37th Pick...Donald J. Ross - Charles River, Aronimink, CC Rochester
Round 4
54th Pick...Herbert Leeds - Bass Rocks, Kebo Valley, Myopia Hunt
Round 5
67th Pick...Wayne Stiles/John Van Kleek - Putterham Meadows, Taconic, Woods Hole
Round 6
84th Pick....Tom Fazio - Wade Hampton, Martis Camp, Pine Hill
Round 7
97th Pick...Mic Hurdzan/Dana Fry - Devil's Pulpit, Devil's Paintbrush, Erin Hills
Round 8
114th Pick...Robert The Trent The Jones The First - Anglebrook, Crag Burn, Montauk Downs

ok-give me Burnham & Barrow instead of Ganton, thus:

1.   MacKenzie - Crystal Downs, Cypress Point, Palmetto
30.  Old Tom - prestwick, lahinch, machrihanish
31.  Coore/Crenshaw - austin golf club, old sandwich, lost farm
60.  Langford- Lawsonia, Skokie, Harrison Hills
61.  Doak - Stonewall (old), Rennaisance Club, Stone Eagle
90.  Hawtree- Western Gailes, Hillside, Island
91.  Alex Russell - Paraparaumu Beach, Royal Melbourne (East), Yarra Yarra
110. Colt - Royal Worlington, Formby, Burnham & Barrow

Nobody took Tom Bendelow and the oft-debated Medinah #3!  So much for everyone who gave me grief for saying it was overrated and ruined by the open doctors...

The order in which my courses were picked was a head-scratcher for me, but, whatever.  My best course not taken is Tumble Creek, despite Jon Cummings' lukewarm review of it, although I would have taken High Pointe earlier if it was open.

Eric S.:  I guess rules are rules, even when they are clearly wrong.  And I guess I need to write a letter to Joe Passov regarding attributions, too.  Harry Colt's last visit to the USA was fifteen years before Alison built Milwaukee CC.  And I can't believe that Woodhall Spa doesn't have S.V. Hotchkin's name in a prominent position.

Hilarious!!!

No.  They were both selected as the third pick in the draft.

I'm happy to have old Heathland, a course that I love, a scrappy veteran, on my team.

Playing Pametto in a week and cannot be more excited. Pasatiempo is the only other MacKenzie course I've played.

Happy Halloween!

I've read some dudes I respect a ton writing that Apache is in Tom's top 5.  Not his own top five, but to them, it was one of his best.

Here's "Team I hate jean shorts, killing gators since 1982"

1} Raynor - Camargo, Shoreacres, Yeaman's Hall
2} MacKenzie -  Augusta, Royal Melbourne, Friar's Head*
3} RT Jones:  Valderamma, Peachtree GC, Spyglass Hill
4} Jack Neville - Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove
5} Old Tom -  Royal North Devon (Westward Ho!), Lundin Links, Crail Golfing Society (Balcomie Links)
6} David Strath - North Berwick
7} Raynor - Country Club of Charleston, Lookout Mountain, Blue Mound
8} Kidd - Nanea, Queenswood, Tetherow

*Coore and Crenshaw (Friars Head) acquired via trade

Pick I'm proudest of:  Tie between Westward Ho! and North Berwick
Pick I don't like that much now:  Tie between RTJ and Kidd.  The 8th rounder was mostly to balance how old my team is.

I feel like I dominated my home area of the Southeast with Augusta, Peachtree, Yeaman's, CC Chucktown, and Lookout Mountain.  I also feel like a weekend playing m courses in Monterrey would be fun.  Raynor fills out my midwest wih Shore, Camargo and Blue Mound.  And a two week trip to Queenswood, Westward Ho!, Lundin, Berwick, and Crail wouldn't be to bad.  I've got some onesy-twosy's out there.  Nanea, Tetherow, Friars Head, Melbourne (West).  But I think their quality and variety is strong.

What'ya think?

I found this exercise interesting.  Even though I goofed around a little here and there (my Muirhead and Nepal courses specifically), it was a really good educational experience.  For two main reasons…

#1—Learning about more golf courses.  Frankly, I don’t know but maybe ˝ of these courses…maybe that number is wrong…but still I had to do a lot of looking up to see what these courses where and what they were all about.

#2—Seeing how people value certain courses.  Tobacco Road a first round pick.  I know Strantz’s work is polarizing and I think this was validated in the “draft”.  Loch Lomond was still available in the last round.  Anyway, I could go on and on…but it was interesting to say the least.

On the lines of courses not picked…

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the following are still available:

The Addington
Durban Country Club
High Pointe
Commonwealth
Desert Highlands
The Machrie
Musselburgh
Downers Grove
Oakhurst
Foxburg
Old Head
Tralee
Kauri Cliffs
Askernish
Portmarnock
Arcadia
Forest Dunes
Bay Harbour
Kingsley Club

Ok…I’ll stop now.

I had a blast on this thread.

Sportsman/Adventure loving golfer.

Rd 2 - (28) - Donald Ross:  Oakland Hills (South), White Bear Yacht Club, [The Balsams (Panorama) waived post-draft]
