I'm with Jim, I hit a good drive and a good 3-wood to get on the front of the green, with the hole cut back right.

Had the hole been cut front left or back left, I think the hole, into the wind, goes to a par 4.5 to 5.

I also watched as Donnie Beck threw balls underhanded from the left side of the green to the front left, lower tier.
I watched those balls roll and roll, right off the green into the fronting bunker.

I can't see how that hole could ever be easy especially when the hole is cut on the left side of the green, with the front tier being the most difficult to get to.

I was being sarcastic about the 18th at FI hence the grin).

It's a damn tough finish and 4 is a mighty fine score on that hole. Jason R played it superbly both times.

It's not an easy finishing hole. Carry over water, fescue on the left, trouble on the right. I made a 4, then 5, not 4, 4. But I didn't reach the green in two either round.

Real tough green.

One thought I had while playing it but didn't mention to anyone else is, what if they cut that fescue down and turned 1 and 18 into one huge fairway, ala Old Course. It may make the hole play a little easier but I think the look would be fantastic.

I'm not so sure it would make 18 play easier, but, it might make # 1 play easier as you could take the water in the DZ out of play.

Coming in to # 18, into that wind, from that far left, over the gaping bunker, is a very demanding shot, and, should you go right with your approach, well, big numbers might be in your future.

I wouldn't want to have to make a 4 on # 18 in a medal play qualifier.
It's a difficult hole on the drive, approach, recovery and putts.

But, fun to play, especially at match play.

Agree it's tough - I pulled both my drives left trying to ensure I didn't take on too much of the cape or trees. It's a strong finishing hole and as Patrick says great in matchplay.

Are you aware of what else was designed at FI by Seth Raynor and never done? Some pretty interesting possibilities I would say. I believe FI ought to construct that other Raynor 18 at this point if for no other reason at least to prevent that slacker Donnie Beck from fishing so damn much!

Is the Biaritz one where the area in front of the hollow plays as green or as fairway?

Even now, some 6 months later, barely a day goes by that I don't think about Fishers Island. It's by far the most beautiful place I've ever seen for a golf course.

Jim-I`ve heard more than once that if there is a course in heaven its Fishers. The quality of the holes are as good as the scenery which makes for an all world experience.

The 9th photo provides a great feel for how uphill the Biarritz hole plays.

The crafting of the holes onto the topography is nothing short of genius.

The 4th hole, alps/punchbowl has to be one of may all time favorites.

Years ago I was at a party in Palm Beach when I met the most stunning, I mean really stunning woman who was the daughter of a member of FI.

From that moment on, when it came to significant structures on FI, Seth Raynor's work become secondary and my interests in FI shifted from GCA to T&A

For me, the toughest part about playing Fishers is taking the ferry back to the mainland knowing I have to go back and play my local muni. Everything else pales in comparison. The 5th tee is my favorite single location on any golf course in the world.

nice photos - conditioning has improved over the last few years
place is awesome - only drawback imho-is hole sequencing - 1 is ok - 2-5-one of the best 4 hole stretches on the planet - some other great holes including the 14th - cape / 11 eden etc however finish is not great

I'm with Pat Mucci on this one....18th at Fishers Island not a great hole?!?!?

On the championship card, 18 plays as a 450 yard par 4.....uphill and into the prevailing wind. It might well be the hardest hole on the course relative to par.

For members, it's a great half par hole as a par 5....perfect for match play.
