Your Best 36 Hole day
« on: October 12, 2009, 12:30:51 AM »
I know it has been discussed on this site before, but in the quick search I made I couldn't find the thread.  I was updating my website of the best 36 hole days we've had golf trippin' and I thought it would be interesting to see what was out there.

My favorite 36 day was when I played NGLA in the morning and Sebonack in the afternoon.  That day is followed up closely by a day at Bandon as well as a Yale/Fishers Island day.  Curious to hear about some other stellar 36 hole days.

On a purely objective analysis of course quality, Machrihanish and Dunaverty isn't the best 36 hole day I've had...but I can't think of a more enjoyable one.

Any combination of the courses at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort - PD and BT was my favorite 36 in June

My best 36 hole day is an afternoon 18 on anyone one of a multitude of courses followed by a few pints, a fine meal and some sleep.  Get up, have a fine breakfast and play 18 more.

All of my best 36 (and more) hole days have been played on one course.  I've done several of the better two course combos but none of them have been as satisfying as spending a whole day at one venue, with close friends and/or kindred souls.

A few years ago with some superintendents from Melbourne - Royal St. Georges in the morning, Swinley Forest in the afternoon.  It was a long day with dinner courtesy of the petrol station down the road from swinley because of course, it was past 7pm and everything shuts.

36 in 4 hours and on a cart - can't have savoured the experience then, expect you just wanted to get it over as soon as possible.  See what using a cart can do – its can kill not just one round of golf but in your case two – Hell, what a waste of two rounds and think of the money as well - we do being Scottish. ;)

All the best Speedy  8) :-\

Four ball in the morning, a quick shower and change into jacket and tie for a wonderful lunch, followed by a change back into golf clothes and an afternoon foursomes match -- that's a day at Muirfield or Royal St George.  Loved 'em both, that's the best.

Two rounds at NGLA with lunch in the birdcage was right behind.

I've never played 36 in a day at two different courses, sounds like a long day!

I didn't play them both in one day, but I have to say that, although Machrihanish is by far the better course, I was thrilled that I bothered to play Dunaverty. It funny how some courses, often overlooked by many, can leave the strongest impression.

My favourite 36 holes day was Lundin & Leven. Not only were the courses fun, but I played with this old member on Lundin who must have been in his 70's. He was 2 under as we walked off the 9th, he shook my hand & said, "That's all I play laddie", & he walked off into the distance.

Can't match the sizzle of the world travelers above, but I love playing Caledonia and True Blue back to back each July.

Chris, If you can't think of a more enjoyable day, why wouldn't that be your best day?
I just did the exact same combo (Mach/Dunaverty) and that is a fantastic day. For the life of me I don't see why more people don't play Dunaverty.
I try to set up trips around a "big course/small course" daily routine.

Almost too many fine 36-hole days to mention. A couple that come to mind immediately...

The very best has to be my dream day in 2005 when a group of us played Cypress Point Club early in the morning if perfect weather then after lunch played the Shore at MPCC in a howling wind. Certainly the two finest courses I've ever played in a single day and the company was superb.

Then there was the Saturday in February when a threesome of us went around Pine Needles twice. It was 60 degrees, windless, cloudless, the course was in perfect firm-and-fast condition and we saw exactly one other player on the course during the entire 36-hole day. Kind of surreal. Apparently there was a NASCAR race down the road in Rockingham so the resort was nearly empty of golfers since every room within 40 miles was booked with race fans.

I could go on and on. I love a full day of golf. Even better is 36 holes and still having some daylight left in high summer.

jim,

black sheep / lost dunes?  2 of my favorites.  I assume this was accomplished during the summer solstice and that all speed limits were complied with in transit... 8)

I played 36 at Old Head a few years ago and it was tremendous. Two groups of 4 played 18 around noon, had lunch and beverages, and then we all played 18 more starting at 5pm (course was empty and we carried, no caddies this time). The weather was almost magical -- warm, sunny, very slight breeze. the course was nearly empty. With a few holes to go, they sent out a cart asking if we would be staying for drinks and dinner (yes!). I've played 36 holes a day on higher "ranked" courses, but never had a better 36 hole day than that one.

I played:

Pacific Dunes with Jeff Brauer - who is such a great guy

Old Macdonald with Dan Schlegel - a close friend and we talked non-stop about the architecture on this wonderful course

a match at Bandon Trails (with 3 clubs) with Steven Goodwin and Dan - and we talked about playing golf "in the edges of time"

Matt - Did you drive or helicopter between courses?!? That's a long day and maybe gets the award for the longest distance between two courses in a day!

about 45 at Macrahanish.  Can't remember how many holes we played the third time out.

36 at BD and BT refereeing two matches at the US Mid Am.  One in an absolute downpour.
