I think that's the 4th, Anthony.  The 3rd is a cool par-3 too!

I absolutely HAVE to play Cruden Bay before I go home! Maybe in conjunction with Rihc's THIS ABSOLUTELY IS NOT A BUDA event at Dornoch in May...

Thanks for the pics Anthony.

It depends on how far you can hit the ball, Melvyn.... ;)

Rich is teasing because 3 plays as an uphill 280 par 4 that can be reached.

I tend to listen to what the club say. I find it has a little more clout and tends to be correct. A 3 on a Par four is a Birdie in my book, but then I could be wrong ;)

Melvyn

PS  Us Scots never tend to know much about golf, we just play the game.

Melvyn, I play by feel, and #3 feels like a one-shotter to me.  If you chose to listen to what the club says on their card rather than what you feel, I think you are on a slippery slope that could end tragically with you asking your wife for a cart with GPS this Chirstmas.

Say it ain't so! :'(

Nice photos of a wonderful looking golf hole.

It looks like the shortest par 5 on the course to me.

The play is definatly long if you are between clubs. I hope the backstop behind the green is evident. I have hit driver before from the back tee.

A hole like this one helps to illustrate how meaningless 'par' can be in certain situations.

The tee shot for the 3rd hole (par 4, 274 yards)

… and the approach to the 3rd green over the crest of fairway.

The gorgeous 4th (par 3, 195 yards) across the waterway from Port Erroll.

What I feel has got me into trouble on this site.

As for Par and Birdies, from now on any score is to be ignored when we watch the Masters and The Open. They have it all wrong and we should go with the feel. So do you want me to talk about how I feel re carts, distance aids, cart ball, uncaring designers who are only in it for the money and nothing else. Feel is sitting on your backside feeling numb because you are too lazy to walk, your brain is numb because it is on standby mode because you use distance aids. Why stop, come on, bring out that feeling to all aspects of golf, you have already made the start, I have added a few so come on its your turn to put your money or should I say feeling where your mouth is, say it as it is.  ;D

The club looks at the bigger picture, that which concerns them, they decide on that basis. Are you all knowing and always right, I am not and many here are not, but we play the game, we enjoy the courtesy these clubs extend to visitors, allowing us to play their courses. I will honour their wishes while a guest. They set the par then thats fine with me. 8)

Melvyn

PS Jim    Meaningless, perhaps not to all the club members only to some visitors  - do you have the full picture of the club and the quality of its members?  But then cart balling is meaningless to me, but does that stop anyone?

Melyvn,
You want to know what gets you into trouble?, you have tunnel vision.

I was paying the hole a compliment by saying that par was meaningless, and that it was the shortest par 5 on the course.

When you step on the tee of a hole such as this you are never quite certain how many strokes it will take before you lift the ball out of the cup. There are only a smattering of holes where you can say that and there are hundreds of thousands where you can't.

Go with flow big guy, it's less painful and you won't have to compromise yourself to do it.  ;)

I think when you are on the tee at number 3 your goal is a birdie three. On the tee at number a bogey four is acceptable. Just one of the things that makes Cruden Bay a joy.

3 begins the great part of course that is ruined by the mockerey of 15 and 16.

Scott,
get in touch with Ally Matheson, he is a GCA'er on this site. He is the course manager there and i'm sure he'd love to take you on. He is a bit of a character and a very handy golfer.

got my week of golf planned for the end of october. it reads like this - monday - mach dunes, tuesday - turnberry, wednesday - west kilbride, thursday - prestwick, friday - royal troon. should be a good week.

Does anybody feel that a pot bunker in the face of the hill looks rank?  If ever there was an opportunity to create wild looking hazards this is it.

As for the 3rd, it certainly goes uphill on the tee, but on balance, its a downhill hole.  Otherwise, very, very people would drive it.
