I guy in our group hit it twoard the fence on 18. It ended up 1 foot inbounds.

When I looked at some video I shot I had that shot and evened zoomed in to catch 3 guys standing at the fence KICK it back in play. No one knew until months after we got back.

I know there's another thread to this effect, but the formalization of the roughs and fairways I've seen on the most recent aerials of the course are indeed truly regrettable.

The other night Jen and I were watching highlights of previous Open Championships, and she made the comment that she loved how The Old Course looked like nature, with no straight lines and little in the way of definition of man-made features.

She doesn't play much, but she does have exquisite tastes, so I'm going to be e bit embarrassed when she stops in front of the telly over the next few days, particularly if an aerial shot is on the screen.

I'm going to have some 'splaining to do!   :-\

Hi

A quick question.

Is the blue circled area usually rough or fairway, or has it ever been fairway?

It's just I sadly only walked the course on Sunday and i was surprised to see this area was rough, for some reason I always thought this area was fairway.

Ross:

I noticed the same area (left side of #16) when I walked the course this March.  It's a dramatic change from what it was in 1982 and up through at least 1990.  I think since then they have gradually been adding rough in that area.  You'll remember Jack Nicklaus criticizing John Daly in 1995 for hitting his driver and hitting it in that direction ... because Jack thought he should have been sitting on his lead, and because the driver was getting him up to where the big bunker at the left of the green plus the sharp slope within the green would give him problems [Jack did not explain all of the latter].  However, big John would certainly not have been aiming there if it was all rough.

Interesting that Jack would criticize Daly for playing left of the Principal's Nose when he's always said playing to the right is "strictly for amateurs!"

What do they call him, "Karnak?!"

Nice to say Daly card a 66 in the first round.
