Strange ground markings at Deal?
« on: June 29, 2009, 06:39:19 AM »
I was taking some yardages on holes at Deal using Google Maps a week or so ago and discovered this in between the 5th and 16th holes.
What I'm referring to is contained in the red circle. Does anyone know what hole it used to be part of? Was it the old blind 4th? It looks similar to the type of cross-bunkering that has been used on 13 and 17.
The 16th runs down the left-hand-side of the pic, the 5th runs up the right and the 4th green is at the bottom right, just to give you some bearings.

Scott they were cross bunkers for the 5th tee shot. The old Sandy Parlour green was bottom centre of your picture. I will send you the 1923 plan and if you can compress it free free to post, I'm too technically backward to post pictures here.

Thanks Mark. Now you mention that 1923 map I think you may already have sent it to me.

How do you figure out the yardages using Google Maps?

Click on My Maps (you may have to register - it is free), log in, click on "distance measurement tool" then "I am feeling geeky" and pick yards.

Mark, I noticed that old poster of the course layout in the locker room today (taken from Tatler Magazine ;D) and saw how these bunkers fit into the scheme of things. I'll see what I can do to compress that old course layout and post it on here.
