Phil's big idea for Bethpage
« on: June 23, 2009, 07:49:05 AM »
Mickelson:

"The people here are incredible, and I just keep thinking that this is like the ideal spot to hold the Ryder Cup," he said Monday.

"First of all, the course is terrific, because 16, 17 and 18 are so close together. And the way the fans are, I think we would have a big advantage."

What do you guys think?

Ugh.

I think that would be the end of the Ryder Cup as after all the yelling and screaming settled the Euro's and their wives would never come back to the States again.

The people there were drunken idiots all week long for the US Open, put all the hype of the Ryder Cup there with those fans and it would make the War at the Shore look like a tea party....some euro might get killed!  ;D

I would like to see them play it under firm and fast conditions, I think this open proved once again that you can make these courses 9k yards and they will still tear it up if they can fire at flags without fear. Firm and fast, with movement in the greens and trouble for being short sided is the only real defense for a pga pro.

As for the Ryder Cup, pass........would you want the final hole coming down to who can hit better 6 irons into the fairway?  ;D
New Orleans, proud to swim home...........

  Agreed. Sportsmanship would not prevail.

I personally think it would be awesome.  I think one thing that would be really interesting is that there would be a ton of euro fans there.  NYC at this point, may have more euro's then American's.

Did sportsmanship prevail in Kentucky?  Do you think the fans in Kentucky this year behaved any better then NY fans would?

"Obviously they're cheering for Phil and all the other guys, but you know, I felt like I had a little bit of support out there. And the crowd was a little bit loud at times, but they were just tremendous. I think they kept me going, they kept everyone going. Because it's been a long week." -- Ross Fisher

That said, I think a match play course like Merion rather than a long brute would be my pick. Reality is the next open date for the US Ryder Cup venue is not till 2024.

I really think Phil should concentrate more on other things.  Granted, someone probably asked his opinion, but he really needs no more distraction and a lot more focus.

i think it would be a disaster for the Ryder Cup. The crowd would take their support too far and it would turn into an unpleasent rather than enthusiastic atmosphere if there is a limitless supply of alcohol. There is no doubt the course would be a great place to hold the event provided its not set up like it is for a US Open.

I think the people in KC were generlly ok in their support IMHO.

With 150+ languages used by students in the NYC school system, Europeans are just one piece of the puzzle:

If Europe was allowed to annex Israel, Carl's statement might be close.  ;)

As of the 2000 census, The New York metropolitan area is home to 3,372,512 Italians making them the largest white group in New York. The New York metropolitan area is home to the largest number of Jews outside Israel. There are more Jews within New York City limits than within Jerusalem city limits, making the New York City Jewish community the largest such community in the world. About 12% of New Yorkers claim to be Jewish or of Jewish descent.[9] New York is also home to nearly a quarter of the nation's South Asians,[10] and the largest African American community of any city in the country.

being Jewish or of Jewish descent doesn't make you Israeli
any more than being Catholic makes you Irish or Hispanic.

By that measure there are NO Americans as we are all immigrants (except native americans)
Would I be rooting for the Europeans because my descendants came from wales?

There are just as many drunken idiots in Wales as there are in Long Island.  Instead of shouing "Yoodaman" of "Geddindahole" they shout "Plaidcymru" (which translates to something like "No Kumbaya in my Valley you English Poofter!").

Only from the Shinnecock canal east
those depicted in the video belong in new York
I'm pretty sure they were behind me at the Yankee game last week

Actually, that's not true.  Israel's Law of Return grants every Jew the right to come to Israel and become an Israeli citizen.

How many of those 3.37 million Italian-Americans living in NY would root for Colin Montgomerie, or Paul Casey, over Phil?  I think the answer is closer to zero than 100.

Does anyone in the know have any stats or figures on the number of ejections or otherwise for the latest US Open?

Would be curious to see how many step over the line and actually have to be ejected vs. being prickish and annoying the players without getting booted.

I think his idea is bad b/c I dont think the course would be good for a Ryder cup.  This notion of the fans being over the top or rooting for Europe is ridiculous.  Firstly, European fans are just as obnoxious as US fans, they just eat their french fries with a fork and knife.  Secondly, I have a good friend who was born in Belgium to Belgian parents but was raised in the US and is a US citizen.  He has never, in all my years of knowing him, ever rooted for the Euro team to win.

The discussion is about the course, not about the fans.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

I thought that the New York fans were ridiculous at the first Bethpage Open and they did nothing to improve my view of them.  Way too many louts.  Way too many people trying to become "part of the story".  Way too many people who were doing an obnoxious New York version of "You the man" or "go in the hole" for my tastes.  The media surely didn't help, with all of the kowtowing to the crowd.  A Ryder Cup would be a bloody disaster.

Yes.

Agreed, and I'm a Manhattanite.  It's an interesting thought but I really do believe it would be a bit too intense.

And every 7 years is enough as far as taking the courses out of play for basically the whole  heart of the season, I hope they decline if the PGA offers.
