Charity Outing

I had a question for the group.  Recently I received an invitation in the mail to play a top 30 course for a charity event.  I don't want to name the course because I don't want to offend anyone.  I will tell you this is not a top 10 course.  The cost was $900.00 per golfer.  Does that sound like a lot in this economy? I know that a charity event is for a good cause, but what would most of you guys be willing to pay?

It would depend on the charity, the course and your financial wherewithal.

If it gave me access to a track I'd never get access to otherwise, I would.

You may be missing the point.
It's a charity event-as in raising money for cause.
If it's too much or you deem it not a worthy cause-don't play.

I recently got a solicitation from an organization to host a charity event-they dictated all price terms and were requesting during prime season.
Shame, but the tone and aggressiveness prevented me from committing our course (and we support multiple charity events and fundraisers)

I guess I just think back to last year when I got to play Oakmont for $500.00.  Oakmont is a top 5 course and I did not mind paying the money.  I understand what Jeff means that sometimes the charity gives a price that they are looking for.  I guess if it was Cypress Point I would not mind paying almost a thousand dollars to play for a charity.

$900. does not seem so bad when compared to the fee that Fox Harbour in Nova Scotia  is asking memebers to dole out to be on the same course as Tiger Woods. See this story:

After years of invitations by Fox Harb'r owner Ron Joyce, Tiger Woods will reportedly headline a private charity event on June 25 and 26.
Nike Golf Canada, the event's primary organizer, hasn't officially confirmed the event, but the Herald quotes sources who say the plans seem more firm now than they were a month ago.
Invitations to play nine holes with the world's best-known golfer have now been sent to members of the golf club. The price? A cool $70,000.
It's all for a good cause - a portion of the proceeds is expected to go to Woods' children's charity, the Tiger Woods Foundation.

I have to agree with others here on not focusing on the price. You should just consider whether or not the charity organization is someone you want to support and how much you want to support them.

I've been involved in auctions where the price for the round of golf went for 4 figures (or HIGHER!) for courses that most of you never even heard of. But they were not really bidding for the round, it was just an excuse to donate money to the charity that they support.

How right you are. We have the Boys and Girls Club Pro-Am here on both courses at MPCC on the Monday of the A.T.& T., and I gladly pay the thousand dollar tag to play my own course.

Rick,

I have recently played a couple of charity outings at some top tier courses and let me tell you it, was worth every nickel.  Not only were the charities for great causes but I was completely blown away by the two courses I got to play.  I did not regret spending the money for a second.  Like Anthony said, do it and have fun.

some of the high ticket charity events also include a trip to the "Titleist" or whatever tent and you can get sometimes hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise that lessens the $ impact if you need a new driver or set of irons.
