Ran, you've dropped HHW's name and that story on here before, I believe.   ;)
I guess you know Brooke Cutler's Dad is a member there.  That may come in handy in case they try to boot you off the grounds for holding forth a little too stridently on one of your theories. ;D

Joel Stewart---Brian Harman has had a reasonably good collegiate career, but not the First team All American status he was no doubt envisioning.  He did play nicely in the '05 Walker Cup as the then-youngest member of the team, and has won the Players Am near Hilton Head, which is a newish, but still-prestigious Am event.

A bit disappointed that Beaufort SC's Mark Anderson didn't make this year's team--he's a hell of a good player (won the SC Am yesterday) and a nice young man.

1st time Walker Cup is held at Merion, and even tho' US leads series 33-7-1...the last 10 Walker Cups are 5-5!
Was fortunate to play there a month ago...16/17/18 are as good a finishing 3 as I can think of...
Amazing when you look at the  yardage overall...course looks friendly and then double bogey, double bogey...WHAT HAPPENED???
Sad, when you compare Merion , and its minimal changes...and, Augusta National and its revamp!!

Harman won Porter Cup in 2007.  Anderson should make the team if he advances to the second or third round of match play at US Amateur...Jackson is old.  Had a great run, but old.

I've heard good things about that Marion course--wouldn't mind checking it out.  Who designed it?

I just emailed Morrissett for an update. Last time I spoke to him I think he said he was bringing 20 of the top cartgirls in the south up in a very large RV and some friend of his is flying 20 showgirls down from New York City.

Actually, belay that. Morrissett's friend is flying 17 showgirls down from New York and Mucci is driving the other three down.

You boys probably won't believe this but a couple of days ago I actually extended an extremely cordial invitation to MacWood and Moriarty to attend the Walker Cup. They haven't rsvped yet but there is still plenty of time. If they decide to come at the last minute that's no problem at all. My neighbor has a massive private company that has a fleet of airplanes including about three G-5s and numerous other shorter hop planes. He even has his own airport over on the east side of the Philly airport. MacWood and Moriarty will feel extremely comfortable in one of his airplanes that all fly under the name of Speculation Hot Air Lines.

Played the East Course yesterday. It was in terrific condition. Lots, IMO, will be decided on those legendary last 5 holes.

If I go, the one green I really want to see these guys putt is #3 ... a magnificent complex.

Tom Dunne:

To help you decide how long you're going to stay 'round Philly way, I would suggest you strongly consider W.C. Fields hugely intelligent thinking and remark that first prize is a week in Philadelphia and second prize is two weeks in Philadelphia.

I think it might be pretty true to say that things around here are generally not quite so hopping as, like, South Beach, Miami, Florida. Around here when the sun goes down we all pretty much go to bed somewhere.

I played the East course as well recently and echo Dan's comments.

I've updated my Merion East photo album with many new shots, in particular of the 3rd hole.  The larger pic size album is here:

Planning to come down from Padanaram with Mel Lucas.  Anxious to know what speed of greens will be offered to the players.

"Anxious to know what speed of greens will be offered to the players."

Willie:

I think sort of like how race day lists the surface of the horse track, the speed of the greens offered to the players will probably be listed as "fast," perhaps even "FAST!"

If you want some analogy people like us can relate to, allow me to borrow my buddy Bill Webster's Maserati and take you for a ride between the Valley Forge exit and the Harrisburg East exit on the Pa Turnpike. Normally one can do that in around an hour driving a bit over 75MPH. In that Maserati, if I wind it up full we should do it in about 27 minutes and then you should be able to get a feel for the speed of the greens that will be offered to those players.

And Bill, do not worry at all if I take a few of those turns about half way to Harrisburg at about 167 mph in that Maserati as Webster absolutely assures me the only possible way to get that particular car to leave the road at any speed is to actually steer it off the road!

Unfortunately, things like Titleist, Nike, Taylor Made, Callaway et al golf balls may not have the same kind of traction Webster's Maserati has. And so if you see a bunch of those golf balls of those Walker Cup players swerving and sliding and falling off greens like #5, #12, #15 and such and completely crashing and burning do not be surprised or shocked by it.

Or alternatively, William, you can give me all your money and together we can start up a new golf ball company called The Maserati Golf Ball Co, Inc, LLD.

I think in 2005 The Golf Channel gave a couple of hours coverage to the WC, both on Saturday and Sunday.  Unfortunately, I've not seen any evidence of any live TV coverage of the 2009 event.   :(

Heck, Joe - I would think that with all your knowledge of picking up stuff and showing it on GCA you could find a camera at Villanova and make a presentation here.

How far are we away are we from this opportunity, Ran ?  With Tom's analysis of speed of greens, to his Mazarati ride, it can't be very far !

Willie:

No sir, you've got the wrong car there by a country mile. I'm talking The Maserati---the ultimate Italian Stallion; one of the very finest automobiles ever made.

That Mazarati thing you mentioned is one of those super cheap imitations from one of those Asian countries that can't decide whether they want to be communist or capitalist.

The Mazarati will fall apart all around you in a month, just like a cheap suit, and the traction on it is so bad as soon as it hits the first wet leaf in the fall----BAAAM!! it skids off the road into a tree and you'll be "in hospital" 'til about the next spring around about the time to tee it up again.
